I wasted an hour trying to pair this with a 2002 jetta until realizing the problem was likely that the battery was dead. I was only getting intermittent led flashing.
After I went and purchased new 2032 battery from HD for another $6 I was able to pair and got up and running. Very annoyed that I wasted this much time on the dead battery.

B-Mac: Note to distributor, including battery's would have gotten you 5 stars. Other than that fact and an original key needs to be shaved a bit to be put into the new fob only 1 major problem.... No one really wants to even attempt to make the keys for vw like this. Once I figured out there's a pin on the keyblade that you can see about half open to pop out and put your old one in I stopped worrying about getting a key cut. Batteries+ had the fobs open and batteries installed for about $30 and some change and maybe 15 minutes so I can tell you it's worth letting them do it. Great product. Battery on the vw is dead so that's about as far as I got right now lol

Amazon Customer: Bought this to replace the metal piece that swings open (which cracked over time). The key blade kept falling off so either $300-plus from dealer or $200 from locksmith for a full replacement. Decided to buy this and see if I can reuse the key blade, internals, and transponder. Watched online and seemed easy - took a little longer but used all the internals so didn’t have to reprogram. However, the OEM key blade had to be shaved as it was a little too thick. With all the right tools, it would be a breeze. Took me 1.5 hours but well worth it.

David M.: Great product overall. It took me only a minute to program the key fob using the instructions. Only down side is the fob is a tight fit with OEM VW key but I got it to work. Comes with battery.

colnjod: Excellent product if all you want is the fob. Programmed it myself easy enough, got the key cut for a reasonable price. Works in the door and the fob works but you can’t use it to start the car because of the immobilizer.

Peter Plank: The fob worked, and after I got the key cut it could start the car, but could not keep the car running. The VW technician said the key did not have a chip in it needed to keep the car running. Waste of money.

When the flip key on one of my original remotes broke 8 years ago, the dealer wanted to charge me almost $300 to replace it and said that was my only alternative. Car is 2001 VW Beetle. So for many years I used the remote part to lock/unlock the doors/trunk and used it with the valet key to start it. I had put the second dealer remote somewhere safe and forgot where! One day I found it and started using it. Unfortunately, I dropped it one too many times and the corner keyring thingy broke off so I went back to the valet key. Recently, while looking for something else on Amazon I found key remotes and began reading up on what it would take to get a new one cut and programmed. I was able to combine the flip key part of the remote with the bad keyring with the bottom half of the one with the broken flip key to have one complete working remote but I wanted a second complete fob in case I lost the only working one.
So I ordered one based on previous reviews thinking I could go to the local Batteries + Bulbs and get it cut/programmed. After many visits and many phone calls I learned that not every one of their stores has the software to program VW's and...

The viewer: I have an 02 Golf and the pair of fobs that the prior owner gave me when I bought it were barely functional. The rubber gaskets were coming apart, and the loop on the end was broken, then repaired, then the repair had broken. So, no way to attach it to a key ring.
The key thing to making this work for you is to understand that you will need the mechanicals from the metal flip-out key end. When you get these, press the little button to flip out the blank key they come with, which reveals a small slot that you can pt a flat head screw driver into, then twist, and it pops apart the electronic button side from the mechanicals.
Now: you have to program the car to recognize the new fob. This is easy to do if you have a pair of mechanical (metal) keys. Put one in the driver side door, turn to the unlocked position, and one in the ignition, turn to the accessories-on position. The hazards blink and then you can press the unlock and lock buttons on the fob simultaneously, hold that for a couple seconds, and then turn everything off.
This should make it so the car recognizes the fob. Press the fob unlock/lock buttons a couple times to see if it did. I...
