Book Addict: For some reason this book did not immediately grab me but I am so glad that I did not give up on it because it did grab me and then I couldn't put it down. The writing and imagery is beautiful and I particularly like the way it swings back and forth in time between the protagonist's childhood and current life. The section where she describes her reaction to the 2016 election was so on point and similar to my own. Very affirming to read that.

Anne G. Henry: I enjoyed the first 75% of the book. The plot was interesting the storyline was easy to follow. The reason for just three stars is because at the end of the book the author slips into the tired leftist liberal anti white narrative. I wish the politics had been left out of it.

OMG Texas: From page one we see the inside like a watch with a glass revealing the gears and workings. S!owly the parts and history are revealed and we see the whole life of a woman. Loved the artful descriptive scenes from the lowly NYC apartment with Ivy and Buttons to luscious Chicago dinner party to bleak and brutal post funeral casserole spread. Loved this book, and the ending did not disappoint.

Lady Crafter: I started this book on Audible and could only make it to the 7th chapter because it mad me feel so depressed. I didn't give up on like some books that I tried and tried and it just couldn't be finished. This book I made the decision to go to my kindle and read it, to still was slow but then it got a whole lot better and I couldn't put it down. It's a very griping story of poverty and the perseverance of a young woman. In some ways I could relate and others I couldn't. All in all it did make for a decent read. I just want to add that this book is by no means my usual genre of books that why I gave it a 4.
I would recommend it if this is your kinda of book.

Joy H.: I enjoyed the writing style and the compelling nature of the story. Great well developed characters and honest, believable storyline. I was hooked immediately.
My review fell short of a five star for one reason- I do not wish to read about which president the character cried about, nor any overly specific politics, for that matter-whether it is the point of view of the character or a not-so-subtle lean of the author. I read to escape the media plagued world, not be reminded of it-quite specifically, starkly, unmistakably nonetheless, in a novel I'm reading to escape the everyday political drama and woes constantly beamed at us through other media attempting to sway our minds in one direction on a daily basis. Save it for your personal life. You're a great writer with a smooth style. Keep the politics neutral, unspecific.

Connie Jorsvik: Extremely intelligent, insightful, unexpected, warmly feminist and Ms. Castro reached into my soul. There was hardly a page that I didn't tag. I came away inspired. I don't read many books twice but I may start this again tomorrow.

lyntrom: Many children grow up in poverty and some go on to overcome the obstacles and become successful in life in many different ways. In some cases this means "burying" a difficult or traumatic past like Isabel, the heroine of this story. When she marries into a family with wealth and influence, she often feels that despite her best efforts, she does not "fit". The unexpected death of her incarcerated mother forces her to go home and takes her on a personal journey that she does not want or expect. It was a good story and well told.

Denise: This book got better as I progressed through it. The characters unfolded and you got to understand them better to make this a good read that kept me on edge till the plot unfolded.

Amazon Customer: I found it heavy going. Not my style of the written word. Others may enjoy it though.
