Jen: so ive struggled with addiction since i was in my early 20's...i attended na and aa but could never work the steps...as a devout atheist, was difficult to stomach all the religious crap in the big book and during meetings...i struggled with the steps and skipped any that contained references to god...so basically, i couldn't work the program...i tried to work them piecemeal but it was impossible to pick and choose which steps to work as the steps are made to be followed in order...this book helped me overcome all of these issues...if you're tired of all the god talk and haven't been successful with the steps because of it, this book is for you

Fresh start!: I reached a point where I needed to successfully change my behaviour. I had at least three negative behaviours that were keeping me broke, unproductive and unfocused. Counselling sessions with a therapist were too expensive for me. Eventually I was recommended a 12 Step program - which are easily accessible post covid via free, online Zoom sessions. However, I found the traditional wording of the 12 Steps old fashioned and alienating. Relinquishing responsibility to my ‘Higher Power’ didn’t feel at all relatable. Thank goodness I found THIS book from Jeffrey Munn. The author explains each of the 12 Steps in their original format then explains them in simple, non secular terms. The author makes what to me, seems dour and old fashioned text, come alive with delightfully uplifting and easy to follow practical steps. I just couldn’t follow the programs without this guide. Highly recommended.

Jeff Talbot: I was hoping for an in-depth analysis of secular dilemmas and solutions. Munn offers a simple program that’s as challenging as any 12 step program. Thank you Jeff!

Nathan Johnson: I read this book after turning my back on both AA & NA due to their dogmatic presentation. I found NA to be less religious than AA, but still WAY too much god is included in NA as well. I've done a lot of taking with me what I found useful & leaving the rest (religion) behind in the rooms. Unfortunately, since the steps REQUIRE you to turn your will & your life over to the care of god (read step 3 on this), it keeps non-believers on the outside looking in. God is mentioned directly (God, Higher Power, or Him) in 6 of the 12 steps, yet the program claims to not be religiously based. This is a disingenuous at best. Do your homework on who wrote the 12 steps before making this claim in the future. With all of that said... Jeffrey Munn has written a 12 step guide that ANYONE, religious or not, may use in their quest to get off of drugs or refrain from maladaptive behaviors. I have been using his book to work these 12-steps since I found the book months ago. I started attending NA meetings again to be able to share, fellowship, & serve. I try to attend secular meetings as much as possible, but still attend standard NA meetings at times as well. I just ignore the...

ShaneShane: In the 12 step recovery world where claims of solutions to our problems are based on giving it up to a mythical power, SSWG offers a respite for all the non religious types who in many cases are desperately seeking another way to stay clean and sober. Relief comes when reading this book that is so needed. Thank you.

TNevermann: I recently had a relapse and went back to 12 step meetings. As Jeffery writes in this book - 12 step programs are excellent at helping addicts get sober. The God aspect has always given me a little PTSD from my childhood. So I am truly grateful to have found this book and explore this perspective. As far as getting sober goes - my motto is, “WHATEVER WORKS!” I also am involved in Buddhist recovery programs and it all seems to be working. Good luck with whatever path you’re on!
