MsMimi: I read American Dirt compulsively - and almost obsessively - in one fell swoop. It’s gorgeously written - thrilling, and gut wrenching, and hopeful, and loving, and haunting. And I don’t think I’ll ever really leave this story behind. Dios mío, I sincerely hope not.

J. Lapin Zell: This is a very important book. It should be required reading in schools as well as for everyone else, particularly in these times. The author makes it so easy for the reader to sympathize with and have empathy for these characters. It is a story of fierce determination and courage to persevere against all odds. I fell in love with the characters and could not put the book down.

Meagan M.: This should be required reading for all people living in America. The author weaves a story of tragedy, bravery and survival that mirrors what thousands of people endure everyday to come to this country. I couldn’t put it down.

Celeste Gorrell Anstiss: One of the best books that I’ve read. It was haunting though - my only regret is reading it while on summer holidays. Some of the content is quite upsetting… but I couldn’t put it down once I started reading!!

Janie U:
This book had been recommended many times and also appears in lots of lists but I hadn't picked it up until now - so I started with high expectations.
There are 454 pages, split into 36 numbered chapters and the book was first published in 2020.
It's easy to read a book set in a familiar world but this is far away from my normal comfort zone so I was delighted that I engaged with the plot straight away. There is a dramatic mass murder scene unfolding around a mother trying to protect her son.
Excitement levels stay high as the reader begins to understand Lydia's anxieties for her life and that of her son.
It's a tough story to read as we see Lydia fighting to escape. The journey is dangerous at every stage with high level of detail giving some idea about the experience of a migrant - fleeing their home, feeling they could die at any time and unsure where they are heading (or how they will get there).
Lydia and Luca make progress and the reader is slipped back into time to give back story, along with an understanding of the "normal" life in Mexico.
Something about the writing allows the book to be accessible for many readers without softening the...

Amazon Customer: I really loved it. It was such a pleasant surprise. It has so many elements: a bit of Mexico, a bit of the US, thriller and an engaging story to bring life to this difficult journey!

Kimberly:
Jeanine Cummins tells the story of a family that experiences a tremendous loss and are forced to become migrants running for their lives from a cartel in this epic tale. Imagine everything horrible that can happen to a migrant, based on the news stories that you’ve heard, and almost all of that happens to one of the characters in this novel. Lydia Perez, her husband Sebastian, and her 8-year-old son Luca live a simple but comfortable life in Acapulco, Mexico, when one terrible momentous day everything changes. Sebastian is a newspaper reporter, who writes a story about the cartel that both Sebastian and Lydia think is innocuous enough. Lydia is the business owner of a bookstore, but she also has a connection to Sebastian’s investigative reporting into the cartels. In short, they both judge wrongly that they are safe, and the price that they pay is devastatingly high.
Readers should be weary Cummins does not shy away from any of the atrocities that happen to migrants. There are themes of death, suicide, trauma, rape, and kidnap throughout. Sex trafficking is implied at points. If you are currently triggered by any of these, this may not be the season...

JH in Florida: Cummins carries out an event of sheer terror in her very first pages and sustains the suspense of what’s next through the entirety of the book; page by page. It’s a travelogue of current Mexico while one runs from the violence of a horrific cartel with a child in tow. The characters they meet, who join, assist or take their toll on our travelers are interesting and well developed. And, it’s a love story on so many levels.
