J.C. Leyendecker: The American Imagist Who Pioneered the Art of Illustration

Randall Reade: I attended the recent show at the New York Historical Society showing Leyendecker's work. It was small, but well worth seeing. In advance, I wanted to learn more about the artist, and this book does an amazing job. Although Leyendecker let a rather reclusive life and didn't leave much for biographers to comb through, the authors of this book found just about every item about his family, life and work as an artist. They give a really full picture of the man, how he become a first rate illustrator, and was a the forefront of many new trends.
First, the quality of the book itself is high. The colors are saturated and the images are well printed to see detail. Second, text is well written and balanced. Third, I really learned a lot about the graphic arts industry during his lifetime, how it changed it, how important it was to American life, and how the medium changed forever. It was a real eye-opener.
The actual images are beyond gorgeous. The drawn men are what every man wants to be -- handsome, virile, and a consummate gentleman. The details of the images are jaw dropping in their virtuosity, and you wonder how any human could draw so convincingly.

Yoann: J'aurais aimé + de pleines pages, et moins de pages qui référencent par 9 les couvertures du "evening post". Cependant l'impression est très bonne, une loupe peut faire l'affaire mais cela reste frustrant.

Note : Article d'occasion noté "très bon", acheté 37 au lieu de 47. Reçu dans un emballage nickel.
Cependant j'aurais dû le prendre neuf : La couverture est arrachée sur 2cm et la jaquette est manquante... Non mentionné dans la description : "Livre lu en excellent état"

Mister Blue: This really is a lavish book brimming with J.C. Leydendecker's work. One thing that I really like is beneath the dust jacket, the front and back covers are decorated with more of his art.

I will say that if you get this book, then get it for the artwork alone and not the written text. It's filled with a lot of inaccuracies and biases by the authors.

This book will definitely appeal to a large variety of people who enjoy art, study art or graphic design or just appreciate vintage art.

Highly recommended!

Josep: Cuando se lee un libro sobre de arte lo más importante son las imágenes y este está lleno. Un obra que faltaba para reivindicar este magnífico ilustrador que creo el mito de Estados Unidos como una Nueva Arcadia de nuevos Apolos regalados con toda suerte de virtudes y modelos para el resto del mundo. Qué pena que este espejismo ya se haya esfumado...

La bellezza del suo tratto lascia in ammirazione e di certo osservando il suo lavoro si può imparare.
Consigliato a chi ama questo periodo dell'illustrazione americana, a chi si stia cimentando con il disegno anatomico e di posa.
