LA Mark: We bought this to use in a fry tank (baby fish). It is important to have an effective filtration device that will not suck up any fish while doing its job. This filter works as it should, though the bio section is very small like others mentioned. The ceramic rings that are included are an inferior quality. An extra set of filter foams is nice, but they are crammed into the filter and deformed from their long storage.

Amazon Customer: Update: I'm sure this would work fine. I like the design. I like Hygger products, love their lighting. It's just too big. for my tank. Think it would work nice in a taller tank. Returning it.
Havent hooked it up yet. I use a sponge filter in my 10gal. Got this for a 20 gallon long tank. I use about 3 in of substrate. It is a bit big for the tank. Bought the smallest. Have to readjust some stuff. Thinking I can cut the piping down some. Only rating it a 3 because of the size. From the reviews I am sure it works fine. I'll up the rating if I can cut it down some. Price isn't that bad.

Ravin: I had an undergravel set up, then a canister filter before I bought this filter ....
My canister filter was super old and crapped out. I needed something affordable and effective, and this sponge filter was an awesome replacement!
The output is a bit more powerful than expected (but that is more the air pump than the filter).
You will see the debris build up on the sponges, and can remove, squeeze them out and place back as you see fit.
My angelfish love laying their eggs on it ....

TnTs MomTnTs Mom: The media could not be loaded. I was very skeptical when I purchased the filter. It got rave reviews and my Betta sorority were not happy because I couldn’t get slow the water down enough when it was getting returned to the tank with my Penguin Bio Wheel, so I decided to buy it and try. So happy that I did! I put my pump higher than the tank so I didn’t want to use the valve (decreased water circulation with it on). For my Bettas I have it turned way down so hardly any ripples … they are extremely happy little fish now. It’s nice that the plants no longer get blown all over the tank . There is a little hum but I kind of find it soothing, lol! Tank is crystal clear. To clean pop off sponges and rinse as well as rinse the media. I liked this so much I replaced my working g bio wheel on my 40 gallon tall (video) as well. It’s awesome. I run it higher but still not blowing my plants and fish all over the place ! I have another tall tank on order and rest assured when I set it up it will be getting this filter in it as well!

SDetaga: Bought this along with the offered air pump. After starting it up, I was not impressed. There was nothing coming out of the filter. An air stone worked so I assumed that the pump was working but perhaps it was not strong enough to push air through the filter. I was very disappointed. I changed the setup, putting the air hose to the filter so both air outlets were connected to the filter. Nothing! I checked the filter for blockages and did not find any. Reconnected and got NOTHING! I assumed that the pump recommended by Amazon when I purchased the filter is capable of supplying enough air for the filter. I was not impressed. I checked out the system on You Tube and found out that it was my error. I had put the "check valve" on backwards. I switched it around and now the filter is bubbling away happily. Still too early to see about effectiveness of cleaning the aquarium, but I have heard good things about these sponge filters and so all I can say at this time that it seems to be working. My aquarium has just been cleaned up and restarted after a period of several weeks. I replaced just about everything in it...gravel, filter, etc. I look forward to seeing how effective this new set...
