The cord was wrapped up in masking tape and the unit was extremely loud and “knocking” when started. When I uninstalled it to investigate, I noticed a loose nut rolling around inside.

Kim Siska: This fan is trash. One of the fan blades fell off by itself during use. We were at a cabin so I unscrewed the case so that I could take the broken fan blade out and cut it's opposing buddy off so that it could be used without being totally out of balance. Putting the case back together, 3 of the screw housings came off of the casing super easily because that platic is also super weak and brittle. Beyond that, this fan does nothing better than the other 2 like it we own, but to turn it off requires pushing the main button around 10+ times to cycle through every other setting before turning off. I usually just pull the power plug out instead. Buy anything else, this is not worth your money.

Mary S.: Living in Hawaii I have purchased many of these. The quality is good and they are a great window fan. The fans are strong and have different speeds and options for sucking the air out or blowing it in. However, its not ideal when its 95* outside. These work great for when it cools down at night. Would recommend, good value for the money.

d hunter: It's quite apparent this was a "return". The box was not completely sealed and the cord was haphazardly wrapped with masking tape. Nothing professional about it. I've bought from Holmes before, and I know this is not how they do things.
I plugged it in and both fans work on all settings. There is of course, the whining noise I've read about when the fan is set to low. But it's not that loud. I have heat pumps outside my window that are much louder. I'll just concentrate on the noise (like meditating), rather than try to ignore it, and let the sound drift me off to sleep. Like I do the heat pumps.
I'll probably never use the temperature settings, so I have no comment on those. High and low are all I really needed. Any less expensive dual fan would have worked, but I needed one that extended further for wider windows. And being a bit more powerful than the less expensive is nice. As far as what I've read about having to go though all the settings to shut it off...just push and hold the button. It will go off.
With this being a "return item" and being in the Midwest where I won't need to use this until probably May, I really wish the return window was longer. That's...

Gilmore Girl: My thermo pump died just in time for the heat wave which is what led to the purchase of this fan. It is highly recommended by several sites and did not disappoint. Air flow is nice and comfortable and you can select one or both fans, as well as the ambient temperature. As the air cools, for example at night, the fan will stop running when it reaches the selected temperature is reached.
I have guillotine windows and needed the extension provided in the box. Perhaps because I was doing this alone, I struggled with the accordion part on the right to make it fit the width of the window properly. There are top and bottom tabs to hold the accordion at a specific length and the bottom tab would lock whenever I put the fan down on the window frame. Also, the left extension is taller than the accordion side, so this creates a bit of a gap on the right side of the window. It can be blocked with a piece of tape. Sound wise, it is not entirely quiet. To me, it produces a constant white noise, like a humming sound, which actually helps me sleep. Holmes offers a 3 year, limited warranty, which is significantly more than the usual 1 year other manufacturers offer. Also, if their claim is...

Robert C: You are in luck today.
This is a direct comparison review between the three most popular currently available twin window fans:
Bionaire BW2300 Twin Window Fan with Remote Control
Holmes HAWF2043 Twin Window Fan
Honeywell HW-628 Enviracaire Twin Window Fan
If you are interested in purchasing any of those window fans, read on...
I didn't intend to have to do this review because I didn't intend to purchase more than one of these fans. I can tell you now that all of these fans are super cheaply designed and built and none of these fans are perfect, but in my opinion, one is worse than the others.
Holmes HAWF2043 Twin Window Fan : my rating - 3 of 5 stars
I first purchased the Holmes HAWF2043 unit. It was lightweight and fit the window nicely although I had trouble with the extender which is located on the right side. The locks for the extender are located on the right side along the top and bottom edge of the fan, which is supremely stupid because as soon as you place the fan in your window frame and put weight on it, the bottom lock locks and you can not move the extender. What rocket scientist thought of this? So you have to unlock...

Anonymous: I have the same exact one that I bought over 15 years ago and the only thing wrong is 1 fan stopped working. It's been 3 more days and been 1 year from my purchase date and the right fan makes a ton of noise blowing in and out. Not impressed. Quality of the product is not the same. I'm guessing it's a bearing in the fan. I'm not positive. We only use this maybe 1 month in the late fall and a couple months in the spring before and after the air conditioner is in and when it gets to cold to keep the window open. So the amount of time we have used this one is nothing compared to the one I have had for 15+ years and still going strong besides the 1 side that doesn't work. I can't remember or figure out if I bought the protection plan. But it's still very annoying when your trying to sleep at night
