Heather Morrison's Novel "Three Sisters": An Intimate Exploration of Family Bonds

Scott Jones: Although the circumstances of the book are horrific it is a wonderful story of family and survival. The historical account is very interesting and beautifully written.

runner: I've read The Tattooist, Cilka's Journey and Three Sisters. Heather Morris is not just an author, she's an artist of storytelling. She actually transports the reader into the soul of the characters - their pain and joy, even the guilt they carry for having survived a horrific ordeal perpetuated by pure evil. I can't wait for her next book.

SueB: The book is one I won't forget. The story of the bond of the three sisters goes beyond what many of us experience in family life. The amount of heartbreak is difficult to comprehend. How anyone can undergo such terrors and remain remotely sane is unimaginable. I have read other books on the same subject and the one thing I would say is that I feel the author has somehow tried almost to protect the reader...the book is distressing but not as graphical as other accounts I have read. I feel sure that the sisters endured mental torture not described, the three together giving each other strength. Respect.

Carol Elmblad: Hard to put down! We know the history of the concentration camps but can’t even imagine the suffering the Jews went through. This book makes you almost feel what they went through, your heart breaks and tears flow as you read through the pages.

Book Reader: ‘Three sisters’ is the final chapter in ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ trilogy,’ which also includes ‘Cilka’s Journey,’ all penned by author, Heather Morris, a lady fast becoming my favourite author.

As young girls, Cibi, Magda and Livia, made a promise to their father that whatever happens, they would always stay together. Years later, this pact is tested when their mother receives a letter from the authorities ordering that fifteen year old, Livia, be presented the next day for transportation to Auschwitz. Older sister, Cibi, (nineteen years of age,) cannot face separation from her sister, so follows her into the camp so she can ‘protect’ her.

Middle sister, Magda, survives the roundup because at the time she is sick in hospital and is spared by medical notes from her doctor. However, she will spend the next two years in hiding whenever there is a knock on the door, or escaping into the forest whenever news reaches her that the soldiers are coming to take her and the rest of the villagers away.

During their first two years in Auschwitz, Cibi and Livia survive the almost daily ‘selections.’ They do this by pinching their cheeks as hard...
