I live in central IL where our winters can get pretty cold so I’ve always grown up cutting firewood for “cheap heat”
With a timber full of red oak, hickory, hedge, elm
I was very hesitant to try a battery powered saw assuming it wouldn’t hold up to these super dense hardwoods.
This saw made my jaw drop. I broke it in on a hickory tree around 12” in diameter and it cut smooth as butter the entire time.
It’s light weight, easy to handle and the battery life held up well in the 19*f temperatures
Great saw!

larry tallman: I am 78 years old, and have owned 15 chainsaws over the last 60 years. I did not even consider a battery operated saw until my back got so bad that I had a hard time starting it. I heat my large home with wood, and I did not want to give it up!! This saw will not replace the 36 inch saws that I have, but, for every day fire wood. And felling trees up to 20 inches it is fantastic!!!!!! For me at this time in my life, I will never need another saw !! Maybe down the road I will have more to say!!!! The battery cuts for 2 hours plus and that’s all I can stand until I rest!!!! Thank you Larry Tallman, Caledonia, New York

This chainsaw is a beast. I bought it after a large oak tree fell and have put it through the ringer. It very easily handles large logs and the bucking spike prevents kick back. It honestly feels like a similar level of power to many gas chainsaws and you almost forget it's electric except for how quiet it is and how much easier it is to start. I even bought a ripping chain for it and hooked it up to an Alaskan sawmill to plane some of the larger logs; while you need to recharge the battery every 2-3 boards, it handles this very well. It is a little heavier than some chainsaws, especially gas, which may be an issue for some, but I personally don't mind. The price tag for this makes it a very affordable option for anyone wanting an electric chainsaw with a lot of giddy up. I knocked it 1 star because the oil cap does not seal adequately, resulting in frequent oil spills when adjusting or changing the chain. It also could use a longer lasting battery, although it charges very quickly (20-30 min). Overall, I really like this chainsaw a lot and would definitely buy again.
Pro:
- excellent power, easily handled large logs
- affordable...

Background -- I live on a 6.5 acre hobby farm and own two Echo chainsaws (18" and 20") to compare to. They, and all the other two stroke engines I have around here are a constant headache. I also own a diesel tractor, a zero turn, and in the past had walk-behind tractors, rototillers, gas pressure washer, etc. Lots of small engines, so much so that after a couple years of living here I went out and took a small engine repair course because dealing with this stuff became expensive and a hassle. I basically have come to hate the smell, the noise, and the hassle of two-stroke engines. Won't start half the time, carburetor clogging up, yanking a stupid start chain over and over again, refilling with fuel, polluting like crazy, etc. etc.
I am also an owner of an electric car and a plugin-hybrid, and I own a few other things in the Greenworks 80V Pro collection (lawnmower, string trimmer, and hedge trimmer), so I already had two battery packs and a charger. I was unable to find the 18" version of this chainsaw without the battery and charger, so I have now have 3 packs and two chargers. Which is not necessarily a bad thing as I'll explain below.

Background:
I was not sure about this purchase as it seemed a bit crazy to try to use a battery powered chainsaw. The reason I was interested is because I was tired of dealing with all the issues that came with my gas chainsaw (18 inch 45 cc). I had replaced the plug, the air filter and a gas line and was dealing with another issue where the chainsaw would not idle properly. I had to turn it off each time I had to adjust position since it would keep spinning. I had enough. I made the best choice to buy this GreenWorks chainsaw.
The Good:
It works as well as the gas chainsaw.
It has the power to take down real trees and clean them.
It is safer (in that it stops when you want instead of a potentially shaky idle)
No more pull start. You push a button then a safety with a trigger. Awesome!
The battery charges fast.
It is very quiet. I would guess it is about 1/3 the noise of a gas chainsaw (not scientific, just a guess).
When you take the side-cover off the bar you can clean the area real easy. There is nothing there except a wheel for the chain, the oil dispenser hole and the bar and chain.
The Not so Good:
The...

JayAyeGee: The Greenworks 80 volt 18" chainsaw is a very nice saw. It runs great and was worth every penny I spent. If you are in the market to purchase a battery powered chainsaw, this saw is hard to beat. Performance is a 9 out of 10, power is 10 out of 10, battery life is 7 out of 10, charging is 9 out of 10, tough and rugged 8 out of 10, I love this saw. It has a nice and modern style but a little ugly to me, but runs great. so for it's appearance I give it a 6 out of 10. Only battery saw on the market that can out cut a gasoline powered chainsaw
