Plato Closeted: This is a fair biography of the famous Cary Grant. and it is fascinating to see how he almost literally carved a life out for himself from virtually nothing. Many nice details but also a little goody two shoes. One can sense that there was a deeper pretty well hidden person there too, which we really don't get much information on. I'm not talking about "did he have boyfriends or no?" I mean what was his motivation for all the marriages, the LSD, the....other stuff. We are big kids now, we can take it.

L.B.Redd: Great book with lots of juicy tidbits about Mr. Beautiful, Cary Grant -- one of the best and the most handsome actors ever to grace the screen. Who cares what his sexual preferences were ....? not I ., that's for sure... while I would always swoon over his movies..... just hearing his voice, and his nuanced humour n the silver screen.... this made me appreciate his acting chops even more. Loved him... always will... I now want to go back and see more of his "obscure" , lesser- known movies.

balaclava: Found out information not common knowledge.......I have adored Cary Grant since I was a little girl.....his charm and natural humor made my heart flutter. I really enjoyed this book, as the author presented a side of Mr. Grant that was far from the public eye. (Of course most biographies of stars do that). The reason I liked this is because he was truly a gentleman and classy human being. His demeanor on screen was so much like his private life....with one exception. I never knew he was a brooder......How could someone that gorgeous brood about anything? I also never knew he had such troubled marriages.......if I caught him he'd be netted and placed on my bed! If you are interested in his career, and his private life, this book is a very interesting read.

Christine McDaniel: This is the perfect book for anyone who is interested in Cary Grant and what and who made him the way he was. Married five times before finding wedded bliss to a lady forty-six years his junior, this screen icon found the elusive happiness as husband and father. This book chronicles the filming of nearly eighty movies Mr. Grant made, states which he liked the best, which he felt were failures, and includes tidbits of private opinions of whom he loved and whom he loathed in his long career. I enjoyed this book, but I wish the author had included a little information about the lives of his daughter, Jennifer, and his last wife, Barbara. I hope they have led happy and fulfilled lives. And I'm sure Cary Grant would agree.

Sandra M-H (Kindle Customer): There are many wonderful pictures included in the book, lots of interesting stories about his life and I learned a lot that I had not known.

I was unaware of what a sad childhood he came from or that his mother was such a distant, unrelenting and difficult woman whom he could never please nor satisfy.

It is no surprise then to learn that he kept his private life to himself and had many emotional insecurities. Nor that he hid all this behind the cool, suave, meticulous character he created who was called Cary Grant.

Well worth the time and cost to buy this book and discover more about the man behind this enduring character.

Wer kennt Cary Grant, unvergessen in zahlreichen Hitchcock Thrillern und Hawks' Komödien nicht?! Wohl jedes Kind kennt (hoffentlich) auch heute noch seinen Namen und seine Filme.
Doch Mr Charming, der sich perfekt selbst inszenierte bzw. zu Cary Grant auch im Privaten wurde, war nicht nur der unbefangene Sonny-Boy, der Hollywood und die Frauenherzen scheint's problemlos und im Sturm eroberte. Ganz im Gegenteil - wie Wansell aufzeigt, ist Archibald Leach, der 1904 in äußerst ärmlichen Verhältnissen in Bristol, England aufwuchs, alles andere als ein unbeschwertes Sonnenscheinchen. Das Verhältnis zu seiner Mutter, die sich für viele Jahre einfach aus dem Leben des kleinen Archibald verabschiedete, und auch dann immer distanziert blieb (so sehr er auch dagegen ankämpfte), wird sein Leben und auch seine Arbeit, zum nicht geringen Teil, prägen.
Doch der Junge macht seinen Weg und gelangt Anfang der 30er Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts in Hollywoods Traumfabrik. Aus Archie wird Cary Grant, nicht zuletzt dem Kassenmagnaten Gary Cooper geschuldet.
