Went to the Smithsonian, and saw this book but didn’t have a way to fly this home with me without damaging it. This was less expensive on Amazon and I just hoped that the book wasn’t going to arrive damaged. But it’s perfect!

The book is exactly as advertised - a visual guide, with emphasis on visual. There are images in abundance but the information about gems can be limited and/or comparable to what one finds in other less expensive guides to gems. As a matter of fact, some photos and captions are identical to those in another DK edition on gems. While I have not found much new info about the physical properties of gems, I was fascinated by the stories about famous gems with neat chronological timelines and historical background that invite further reading and research. The section on minerals at the end is informative indeed and redeeming. What I did not like about the book was its size and heft, one needs to read it at the table, rather than reclined in an armchair or in bed. Overall, this is a good and entertaining visual guide, it makes a good gift for any gem lover.

I’m a graduate gemologist .. I’ve seen many beautiful and informative publications on this subject over the years .. and yet I was totally blown away by this book. It’s amazing .. the quality of the photography, the layout, the information, the quality of the pages .. it all adds up to an amazing experience. If you love gemstones and minerals ... buy this book. You’ll be very glad you did.

I love to read and learn more about different gems and minerals in my free time, and this guide is the best I’ve come around so far. The pictures are incredibly gorgeous, and you really gain a new sense of appreciation for them after reading this. I especially love how it covers the history of certain gems, how they are graded and more! I could never get bored of looking at this book. It’s a must have!

To say the very least this book captures the beautiful and stunning quality of gemstones. The pictures are pristine and this book offers many features. There are historical stones/jewelry pieces from around the world, photos of the gems in natural and cut states and info regarding the physical properties of the stones. Sections include:

A must have book at an amazing price (its list price and rate at my local book store 49.99).
Would not recommend to jewelers looking for detailed info about identifying stones for business but definitely for anyone else in love with nature's gems
