Corinne: It was awesome until it was 10 months old... now anytime I try to use it it just shuts off even with new batteries. It has never been misused or damaged. Trying to deal with warranty has not been fun...

Justin Clarke: Great product, fairly easy to use, got it in 1 day with the free shipping!

I feel as though it should have been preloaded with Canadian maps though even if it were the basic ones (which is why I gave it 1 star less than 5). Other than that AWESOME

Mark: This is a great tool. I bought this for hiking but I have only used it around the neighborhood and in the car so far. I am still learning how to use it well. I find that it can be hard to remember how to operate some of the features at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is quite accurate and easy to retrace or to return to a waypoint within about 5 feet. You can also setup proximity alarms to waypoints that are helpful and you can get a lot of help on You Tube. At first the maps seemed a little pricey to me, but they are well worth it. I can find places that I have been where it's hard to find a map for, so this seems perfect for the person who likes those primitive trails. Just make sure you use it a lot before you hit the trail so you don't waste time fumbling with it. Also, this unit has decent battery life and it's a good idea to use it with a lanyard attached.

Jeff Lippincott: This device (the eTrex 20x) is a gem. Thus the five star rating. I've been studying it and used it on some bicycle rides over the past two months. I've read several of the Amazon reviews for this product, and few do a good job of informing the consumer. I think this is because the product caters to so many different endusers: boaters, kayakers, walkers, hikers, off-road cyclists, and on-road cyclists. My review is written from the perspective of an on-road cyclist. And I'm not going to write a review as much as merely answer a series of questions.

1. Can you charge this device using a USB cable? >>No. The device uses two AA batteries for power. They can be cheap alkaline, or the more expensive rechargeable NiMH or lithium. Alkaline work ok if the weather is warm or hot. If you go the rechargeable route, don't buy cheap ones that have less than 2000 capacity. I didn't know rechargeables came in different capacities. Duh! The rechargeable batteries need to be recharged using a separate recharging device.
2. What do you use the USB cable for that comes with the device? >>To connect your device to your PC or Mac so you can update software or move GPX files on or...

mtndweller: The eTrex20x is relatively light (5 oz) and has excellent battery life. Using 2 Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries, this unit can run for 55 hours (five days, 11 hours per day). I conservatively replace the batteries when the battery indicator shows only one bar, but they may well last another day or so. This extended battery life reduces the number of replacement batteries carried on longer backpacking trips--a big plus. To help extend battery life, I seldom use the backlighting and typically do nothing but zoom the map in and out as needed to stay oriented and on the trail. I assume regular use of other features would shorten battery life.

As other reviewers have noted, the big negative to the eTrex20x is the clunkiness of Garmin software, limited instructions, and the cost of Garmin topo maps. These problems are the reason I didn’t give the unit five stars. BaseCamp is the Garmin software used to manage the maps, tracks, routes, and waypoints used in the eTrex20x. It took some time to learn, but I was eventually able to load base maps and routes and then transfer them to the eTrex20x. For topo base maps, I use the state maps available from GPSFileDepot...

Mr Tea: Perfect GPS for general outdoors activity. I think it could work great for bicycle touring or for small boats/kayak/canoe (don't know if it floats). Excellent signal acquisition. You can find free maps to download (google it). If you don't cover thousands of miles, the internal memory is plenty to store the maps and data points. I like it because it is smaller than I thought (small screen = better battery life and lighter), it's solid and water resistant. I choose this model specifically because it is not a touch screen. Touch screens are good for phones but in winter time with thick gloves or when I'm in a boat or truck that shakes, or when I have dirty fingers (outdoors = dirty fingers), I WANT BUTTONS. This unit has been tested and worked great at -40 C/F in the taiga so it's plenty good for that. In the winter, you can put lithium AAs, carry spares and have the peace of mind it won't die on you. I couldn't be happier with it. Final thought, this unit can do car navigation and map routing but it's NOT the intended purpose so don't buy that to use it in your car only. It's VERY easy to use too but don't be a fool and read the manual and get used to it before going in the woods.

Ryan Danroth: After playing around and getting the right maps on there (I'd suggest looking at a tutorial involving openstreetmaps for some free, open sourced, maps rather than paying the outrageous prices for map packs). This little sucker packs a lot of functionality. Screen resolution is just fine for the size, and though it's a little fuzzy at times I find it gives a bit of charm to this machine. Yes, it may be a bit clunky, slow to load, and have the blips, bleeps, and clicks of a Windows DOS game - but once you power it up, select your route, and get on your way - this thing is wicked accurate. It'll get you through the woods and out again if you bring enough batteries.
