Darrell: I purchased an oversized yoga mat years ago. It came with straps to hold it but the straps weren't adjustable and far too large. Four years later I finally get around to buying something to hold my yoga mat closed.
The Gaiam strap is very thick and sturdy. It curls in on itself. So when you wrap it around the rolled up yoga mat, it holds it closed very well.
The yoga mat I have is extra thick (5mm or 0.2 inches) and approximate 245cm or 96 inches long. So when it is rolled up, it is extremely thick. Normal straps and bags don't seem to be able to hold it. The Gaiam strap JUST fits this mat. If it was a smaller mat then it would fit it without trouble. But even with such a thick and long mat this strap works fine.
One word of warning, you only get *ONE* strap. For some reason I thought I was getting two straps, one for each end of the rolled up mat. However there was only one strap and after looking at my invoice I realized I had only ordered one strap. Still, the strap is solid enough that one in the middle of the rolled up mat is fine.
I've only had it for a short while. Still not sure if it was hold its shape after repeated opening and closing but so...
