Guy who cooks: Was it so meaningful about that Cockroach story? When I read it now again after decades it sure seemed silly. There are many other short stories here for fans of Kafka. Many are depressing.

Julia Alexander: This is the Muir translation of Kafka's original works and, as such, has critically-acknowledged issues, but it is still widely used in educational settings with that caveat. It contains almost everything he wrote minus a number (2?) of his full-length novels, so it is a comprehensive representative of his traditionally translated work. It was a required textbook for a graduate English course. It performed exactly to expectations.

Amazon Customer: Really good collection, including a great foreword by John Updike. The table of contents is annotated with which stories were published during Kafka's lifetime, and which ones were published by his estate posthumously. There are a lot of shorter stories in here which are great for a quick read and taking the time to dissect them. The book is laid out well and to top it off, the paper and print quality is very good.

Having read a number of the stories online previous to owning this book, my only complaint would be with the translation: It is very literal and therefore loses some of the flourishes that other translations have, favoring the terse over the prose. This isn't a huge complaint, but as you read the text there are points where it is fairly obvious that it is a translation.

I recently purchased this book in faith, though I was also frustrated by the lack of information in the book description. So, I will provide here for you the table of contents so that whoever purchases this book from now on can know exactly what they are getting:
(By the way, the book is beautifully new & well designed, with the edges of the pages torn, not cut.)
When it says the complete stories, it means it. The foreword assures that the book contains "all of the fiction that Kafka committed to publication during his lifetime." That meas his novels, which he did NOT intend to be published but left note in his will to be destroyed, are NOT included: The Trial, America, The Castle. I have put his more famous stories in caps.
