Matthew Coblentz: At lot of times you read a mil-space opera and can pick out the problems with technology. Not here. I’m sure there are some, but it’s so well written that I missed them. I’m dying to read the next installment.

P. Seagrave: I discovered Marko Kloos recently by reading his three available Palladium Wars books. Having loved every minute of them I dived straight into the Frontlines series. Now this is far from a bad book and I would still happily recommend to anyone that enjoys Military Sci-fi however when coming to this book from the authors later works you can really see how he has improved as a writer. It's not as easy to visualise some of the locations and indeed characters in this book as it may lack some finer detail in description. I find the main alien threat in the book to be particularly badly fleshed out to the point I can't really visualise what the author was going for and it leaves them feeling a lot less threatening than I think they are meant to come across. Also the shift from story telling narration in Palladium Wars to a 3rd person perspective was initially difficult to adapt to. All this being said it still had me turning to the next page and blasting through this book in short order. Already on to book two!

WyoGal: I read voraciously and rarely bother to keep track of titles or authors, much less tell my husband about each book. However, this story really captured my attention and kept me reading late into the night. I shared the plot with my husband (who is not one to read), because it was really intense.
The story focuses on a new recruit as he goes through basic training and gets caught up in an urban military battle-to-the-death against a mob. His military career takes a turn at about the halfway point in the book, and he eventually ends up in space in more dire and desperate situations. The protagonist is intelligent, likable, and knows how to play it cool under duress.
The author ratchets up the intensity by immersing the reader in vivid, blow-by-blow action details. Military sci-fi fans will enjoy this story, and so will readers who appreciate great action scenes. The sci-fi part, which is more toward the second half is intriguing. I wish the cover art illustrated the creatures on the colonized planet or that there were some more details as I had difficulty imagining them. C.Paulin: Terms of Enlistment was a pleasant surprise. I read some reviews compare this to the Starship Troopers movie, but it felt more like the book to me.
What I liked:
- the writing quality is exceptional for the genre. There's a strong voice and the descriptions are vivid and original.
- subtle plot. Too often people screech about "stakes" and how the main character needs to be on fire with a ticking time bomb in their colon. What kept me turning the pages was Andrew's relationship with Halley and hoping they would be reunited again.
- exposition is nicely woven into the story. This is the weakness of most sci-fi novels: long, detailed narration about worlds and technology.
What I didn't like:
- I don't mind plots paralleling other stories, but a portion of this book is far too similar to Black Hawk Down.
- The battle scenes are nicely detailed, but maybe a little too detailed. They often felt drawn out, and there were times when I found myself skimming. You can only read about shooting distant targets or buildings getting leveled so many times before it feels repetitive. Erlend Strømsvik: I had a difficult time deciding between giving this book 2 or 3 stars.
I might have gone for 3 stars for this book only, but the second book in this story is just too much... In a bad way.
Me review is for both books and the story as a whole, Terms of Enlistment and Lines of Departure. I just finished reading both books.

My review will most likely contain spoilers. Sorry about that. But if you are looking for the good science fiction, with some weight behind the "science"-part, you will appreciate this and save some money.
Just to get this out of the way... It's an ok story, except for it taking place in space.
The author has good language/writing skills. The story not as eloquent and richly worded as a work of Tolkien, and the simple/straightforward writing style could not conjure the same emotions for me as a reader, as say reading a book of JK Rowling. Saying this I did enjoy reading some parts of the first book. The second book not so much.
I really don't know what more positive to say about these, so I'll get down to the things I don't understand or found problematic.
Why did the author write this story? I ask because it seems...

The first ~80% of the book is like watching a great war movie. After that, it switches gears into a space-faring, hostile alien story. What's not to like? A very pleasant read, written in a style that I much prefer. I'm ordering the next couple of books in the series right now!
