Steve: NGL. I'm no authority on firesteels. All I know is they're supposed to make sparks and the more sparks the better. These make a lot of sparks, especially if you use a piece of high TPI hacksaw blade as a scraper.
They came from China so the sparks are probably created by burning asbestos dust or something, but they do work okay and that's what matters, amirite?
Now, me, I like to go in the bathroom and scrape it several times, just to make it smell like something is burning in there. Doing this makes my wife paranoid, especially when I tell her something like it's probably just an old wire arcing against the pipes in the wall and nothing to worry about as long as you're not standing in the shower when it happens, and that amuses me.
It's the little pleasures that make life worth living, folks, and therein lies the true value of this product.

Chang S.: Unlike the product description picture, there is no sticker on the ferro rod. The length is 3 and 7/8 inches. The 3/8 inch outer diameter should fit the ferro rod holder on the knife sheath. Made in China.
Very easy to throw sparks. Considering the price, I recommend it.

TNS: I've been using various brands of ferro rods for over 25 years. Softer metals require less effort, throw sparks that last longer and hotter resulting in faster fires. These ferro rods perform great. So what if they don't last as long as some others. Its all about performance.
