Paparaptor: I have several Fender Stratocasters. I wanted to experiment with the tremolo setup, trying various spring combinations. None of the guitars had all 5 springs. While trying different settings with different springs, I discovered that these springs are much stronger than the ones that came with my 12 year old American Fender Stratocaster or else the strings in the guitar had weakened over the years. I ended up replacing the springs on it.

Bkon33: I recently install the Fender Standard Vintage bridge assembly on my Donnor DST-152R which resonates with improvement. The Donnor comes with 3 springs and they work fine it's just for me I don't use the whammy bar much and don't care for how the guitar goes out of tune when used. So I decided to install all 5 Fender springs to deck the bride assembly, which increases sustain and stabilizes the guitar from going out of tune. It works well for me and I still can use the whammy bar in the downward position.

Craig G.: I’ve always heard that tremolo springs never really wear out, but from a recent experience have found that’s just not the case.

I performed the last string change on my American Stratocaster (which is about 15 years old) using the same light-gauge strings I always had, Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9’s. When I went to double-check the guitar’s set-up, to my horror I noticed that the rear of the bridge had lifted about a half inch off the body, when it was previously decked.

This guitar’s hardware is totally stock, with no locking nut, tuners, or things of that nature. That said, I prefer to keep the bridge decked since it stays in tune much better, plus I only use the tremolo for dives anyway.

In my opinion, out-of-the-box Stratocaster hardware isn’t very well suited for floating the bridge without encountering tuning issues. To accomplish that reliably, you may need to take out a second mortgage on your house to be able to afford complete Floyd Rose replacements.

After some considerable tightening of the spring claw (3 stock springs were installed, all mounted vertically), I still couldn’t get the situation remedied, and dared not over-tighten...
