drjec20002: With well researched history and great humanity Jones traces the wrongs committed by white Christian supremacists that have greatly harmed people of color but has also harmed white Christians who believe they are the chosen ones. Trite in our times as it may seem, Jones sees LOVE as the path to improving our future. Jones shows that accepting the wrongs of our ancestors, though difficult, opens our minds and our hearts. This is a phenomenal book that you owe to your mind and your heart

Mark Campbell: Robert Jones has provided readers with a scathing indictment of white Christian America. He examines the historical record to show that American Christianity’s theological core has been thoroughly structured by an interest in protecting white supremacy and uses public opinion survey data to show a positive correlation between white supremacy and Christianity in contemporary society. And not just evangelicals but a majority of mainline denominations as well as Catholics.
As just one of the many historical examples consider the following more recent event. In 1965 Jerry Falwell declined to participate in the civil rights movement. According to Falwell, “Preachers are not called to be politicians, but to be soul winners.” In 1979, however, after Bob Jones University lost its tax-exempt status over its racially discriminatory policies, Falwell formed his own political organization, the Moral Majority. Now, according to Falwell, “The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the devil”. As Jones explains, what appears to be a contradiction is merely a tactical maneuver when one realizes that the primary goal is to defend white supremacy. When white...

Ina: I bought several well researched books about evangelicalism and racism. This was the best.
The author has stellar southern evangelical credentials. But his thoughtful examination of the evangelical perpetuation of racism is based on evidence. His sorrow is that while his parents taught him to treat everyone with dignity, the churches where he learned and served never examined their racial sins.

Thor-Zine: In 1965 Dr. King called a Preacher's march to Selma Alabama, Ministers from all over the US of different Denominations came to march with him, my Pastor was one of them. What they found was a culture shock of their southern versions who ran segregated churches preaching antimiscegenation, things they thought were contrary to what they believed the gospel said, and these people were comfortable teaching and spreading it. As some of these pastors came back home it was also apparent that as they were also ministering to all-white congregations in all-white neighborhoods the race problem might not be just confined to the South.
Though Jones doesn't tell that story (I wish he would) he doesn't spare "Northern" Ministers nor Catholics in his books, nor does he start way back at Columbus, he integrates his own family experience and teachings in the deep south for an interesting experience. Much of it Subtle the rest of it in the face. The fact is no racial law or policy in the United States was ever passed without approval from the Church. In the South, the Baptist separated and started their own organization in support of slavery and the (what he shows) the Confederate Cause...
