Plentymore: I am delighted to have stumbled upon this set of works by Foucault, and having just completed the first of 3, I am throwing myself headlong into the next because he is so capable, as a writer, of elucidating that which I have always suspected but have never had told to me so effectively. Of course many will disagree, find fault, even hate his work, but I suspect that is mostly due to how much they despise what he reveals to the thinking mind and perhaps they do not really wish to know this much?

Mark Wenger: This is not the best introduction to Foucault, but it is perhaps one of his most important projects, for him personally, but also for contemporary society. Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality, Part 1 has about as much to do with historiography or sex (as those interested in either or both of those subjects might imagine them) as in vitro fertilization has to do with intimacy, and many are the expressed frustrations about all three! I am not expressing such frustration, however – I am highlighting the fact that when in vitro fertilization is the project of choice, intimacy is not really a concern. And for Foucault, when demonstrating the totalizing function of power, neither a chronological narrative of events, places, and people normally found in a history text, nor an articulation or advocacy of the potential pleasures of various positions or deployments of body parts is a concern.
It takes a particularly confident grasp of one’s assumptions and claims to undertake a genealogy of forces as they are constituted in the evolving constructs of sexuality from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Foucault clearly was confident in his assumptions and claims, and it seems to...

B. Marold: The History of Sexuality, Volume !: An Introduction by Michel Foucault, is this major French thinker's last work, and since so many others have given a good sense of what the book is about, I will be brief. My only demur to their opinions is that while this may be his most popular book, it is not his best, or his most influential among scholars.
It is very important to note that this is not a history of sex. It is not even a history of talking about sex. It is a history of the way in which talking about sex was structured over the last three hundred years, his primary thesis being that contrary to popular belief, the Victorian era, roughly between 1835 and 1903, was NOT a period where talk about sex was repressed. To be sure, Freud and the other psychoanalysts made major influences in how we talk about sexuality, but Freud was as much a milestone as it was a cause of the change. The book is devoted to two critical shifts in attitudes about sex. The first was from the onset of legislation about sex early in the industrial age, to the formation of sexual archetypes or "types of sexuality". The second major shift, which contributed to the first, was the simultaneous change in...
