William H.William H.: I bought this scope because it was under $60 and I wanted something that I could customize and experiment with for imaging. I was pleasantly surprised!
On the bad side, the diagonal was not good. It produced a double image. I didn't care since I wouldn't be using it anyway. The finder was also not great. It worked, but was somewhat tricky to align. Again, I wasn't planning on using it so I didn't care.
Now for the good: The 70mm objective lens is surprisingly good for a "beginner" scope. It's actually a decent piece of glass. The rack & pinion focuser is just fine. With a little tension adjustment it worked better than I was expecting. The tripod was also better than I was expecting. I'm not using it, but it is a functional tabletop tripod and I'll find a use for it. The oculars were also better than expected and are going into my collection. The carrying case is great and I'm using it to hold accessories for my other scopes.
Now for the really good: The objective lens, optical tube assembly and focuser are excellent for the price. The focus tube is long enough for use with any CCD or CMOS camera. I mounted mine on a fluid pan-head mount, swapped out...

Nitin Aggarwal: At this price, This is the best thing as could be. I only sees the moon first. its a little shaky. Big size lense was good. But small lense was best. Moon's crater can be seen very zoomly. I was surprised. I was reading reviews for this telescope. After very research on internet i buy this product. Packaging was very good, i can say the best. Assembling it was also quite easy. You cannot see star perfectly cause they are so far. But moon can be seen very nicely. The problem is only that because of its bit shaky nature you have to work hard a little. There were clouds around the moon in the sky. But when it came out of clouds it was a light bulb, so beautiful. I was thinking to watch. Best buy. I surely recommend this. Just remember one thing that dont expect too much as hubble telescope.

Tony D.: For a first time telescope the Barska AE10100 Starwatcher 40070 Compact... has met all my expectations. What a great telescope for viewing the stars and moon.

James Van Wagoner: This Lil Guy is GREAT!
I bought it exclusively for camping, and it is just the perfect size for traveling.
using this for casual Stargazing works just fine, don't expect to see anything too far away, but these are better than Binoculars and a spotting scope. Then looking at the moon you will be very impressed with the clarity and the detail you are not used to seeing.
I looked at a few constellations. I was able to see a Binary Star when to the Naked Eye it appeared to be a single star.
I can't remember the Name of the Star but it was in May in the southern sky viewed from the United States.

Brendon: Purchased this telescope for our last Lunar Eclipse. It worked great! Was surprisingly easy to use and clear. Have since attempted to use it for the viewing of other stellar bodies, which as not worked out so well. The tripod is far to unstable for maximum magnification (unless you're OK with watching Mars wobble around in a blurry circle). However, for some basic stargazing or looking at the detail of the moon, it worked great!

Honestly, it's a ~$65 Telescope. I wasn't expecting incredible quality. Works great, portability factor is awesome, solid (even though it's all plastic) build quality. Great entry level amateur telescope!

JS: I bought two of the BARSKA Starwatcher 400x70mm telescopes for my two grandsons. Their faces lit up when they opened them - boys love their toys. It was fairly easy to set up, and we are planning to do some daytime field scoping to practice using them, before using them at night to look at the moon and stars. These were well worth the money for a beginner telescope, since you do get a table top tripod with it. You can always purchase an inexpensive larger camera tripod later. I also got The Everything Kids' Astronomy Book for each of them. I liked what I saw in the book, but haven't heard from the boys what they think. I thought it would be good to have some type of easy to read reference for them.

Anders W. : I am a pretty advance amateur-astronomer and have used a few different telescopes. I bought this as a "travel scope" and to use as a guide-scope for astro-photography.
I suspected it would be plastic and rather "cheapo" looking, and I was right... it is!
But, it is not wobbly or bad to handle, surprisingly sturdy and good optics considering the price.
You do get what you pay for when it comes to telescopes and expecting to see "Hubble" images through this scope is bound to make you disappointed.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by the crisp image this scope gave when looking at the moon.

The supplied barlow (3x) and eyepieces are laughable to a "serious" amateur-astronomer but they do actually perform very well. Unfortunately a 4mm eyepiece is too powerful for a scope like this, it would have made more sense to ship it with a 8 or 12 mm instead. The barlow is plastic but the lens is actually of quite good quality and does not stretch or blur the image noticeably around the edges. If you already have a set of eyepieces you can throw the supplied once in the garbage without any regret, if not, the supplied ones will work pretty good but don't...
