LC: I enjoy this book very much. My knowledge to Egyptian mythology only limited to Mummy the movie and this book fills my childhood gap for the mystery of the book of the dead and the Imhotep story

Jarin Jove: I've been reading this book on and off at my leisure and while I do believe that it is a valid introductory course to Egyptian mythology and I don't want to take away from the author's expertise; I must sadly point out a disappointing failing that is repeated in reference to how the Egyptian deities are related to food production and how they symbolize certain foods within Egyptian delicacies.

The author mistakenly refers to deities who produce "grain" as representing "corn" and "cornfields" but this cannot be, because corn was invented by Indigenous people in Mesoamerica approximately 10,000 or more years ago and are a scientific achievement of Native Americans with no influence from Egypt or the West. In some Indigenous cultures, corn is even represented as synonymous with human engineering through prayer or rituals such as in the Navajo Creation story's reference to the birth of Changing Woman and White-Shell Woman by the Four Holy People of the Navajo.

I know that may seem pedantic to some people, but I feel it is genuinely important for academic integrity that we correctly refer to what type of "grain" each of the Egyptian deities authentically represented...

C.M.S.: Completely satisfied with this purchase. Arrived very quickly and in excellent condition. Price was more than fair ( best price found anywhere) and I love the guarantee from Amazon that covers most purchases. This guarantee is better that the big box stores like Walmart. I have shopped at Amazon for over twenty-five years and have had to return a small handful of items.

justine robinson: Filled with lots of valuable information. For me the beginning of the book was to dry and boring to read. It gets good towards the middle. However a good read for someone interested in Egyptian mythology

Lau: Nice informative book, I was a bit lost in the beginning as it did not start off as an easy read but since page 20 or so I really started enjoying it! Worth it if you want to dive into the subject a bit deeper or also for studying I presume.

M. Lawton: Trying to get a little clarity into the bewildering belief systems of Ancient Egypt is not an easy task but Geraldine Pinch definitely nails it. With its multiplicity of deities whose attributes sometimes changed over the millenia, Egyptian mythology allows a variety of interpretations and too many books on the subject leave the reader more confused than enlightened. She is not dogmatic in her approach and offers various interpretations but doesn't beat you to death with her encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. I thought she hit the right balance and on occasions had some profound insights to offer.

Its probably not the book to get if you know nothing of the subject, nor if you've already graduated to reading Hornung or Assman. As the title implies, it is a guide to Gods and Goddesses and the traditions from which they arose. It is not a collection of stories like the Greek myths. There are stories and anecdotes but they are not a major feature of the book.

A good all round reference work that you'll keep going back to.
