Cricket: I think teachers should read this book especially with the advent of AI because past exercises focused on reading something and doing a worksheet are basically pointless. We must adjust and pivot and there are lots of good ideas here. But while the principles are sound, the book is too long IMO. Start with the conclusion and skim the rest.

DES: “The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside The Brain” attempts to teach us the benefits of using our entire bodies, relationships, and everything around us rather than just relying on our brain to move us through life. Author Annie Murphy Paul says we typically ignore the messages our body sends us, insisting that ‘the brain is the sole locus of thinking, a cordoned-off space where cognition happens, much as the workings of my laptop are sealed inside its aluminum case.’
The book's introduction reminds us of two metaphors that traditionally describe how the human brain works. One was the brain as a computer. The second was the brain as a muscle. It would get stronger with more use. The brain functions like a computer by analyzing and spitting out the results. The author quotes philosopher John Sorrell, who, in 1984, said, “Because we do not understand the brain very well. We are constantly tempted to use the latest technology as a model for trying to understand it. “
Paul says we need to focus more on internal signals, like how our hearts beat and how cold and clammy our hands are, as it creates a greater awareness of everything around us. Or put...

Gayle Scroggs, PhD, PCC: The author illuminates ideas that many of us already implicitly understand: that keeping a thought log or creating a mind map or physically interacting with concepts enhances comprehension and memory. So does having to explain what you've learned to someone else. She provides an abundance of supporting research and a nice set of principles as a conclusion. To really "get" these ideas, I drew them in a big illustration that shows a person writing a journal, taking a walk, talking to someone, gesturing, etc....Putting the ideas into practice is more fun than just reading a book.

Julian Williams: This is an excellent book.
Her theme is that modern teaching, learning and problem solving have become bogged down by brain bound and siloed traditions. Sitting in rows in classroom, or working in open planned offices are simply adding cognitive load to our underpowered brains and draining our learning capacities. Modern life, with all the extra skills and information that is being thrown at us has put our brains into a state of permanent cognitive overload. By extending and embedding our thinking into our bodies, surroundings and social environment we can reduce the cognitive load on overworked brains which were never designed to be so focused on holding multiple conceptual ideas at once. By simply acknowledging these factors we can enhance our receptiveness and abilities to take in and process new information. (I don't agree with the reviewer that thinks the book is not well researched or comprehensive in its choice science)
The book is methodical, Part 1 is made up with 3 chapters about thinking with sensation, gesture, movement and gestures of Acknowledging interoceptive tools instead of relying on long winded reasoning. .
Part 2 is about the influence of...

Mr. Michael R. Mcdowell: While not strictly about our mind being extended into (or entangled with) the world, it's rather, that our cognitive capacity can be enhanced by using bodily and worldly resources, such as "interoceptive signals, movements and gestures, natural spaces, built spaces, and the 'space of ideas'; experts, peers, and groups". With each chapter being dedicated to the use off, and research, supporting each of these resources in extending our mental capacity.
The books concludes with ten principles, or suggestions, that we should employ to make the most or our minds ability to exploit "extra-neural resources" to enhance our intelligence.
All in all a very interesting read, some of extensions you may already be familiar with, but still worth knowing that they are backed up by some impressive research. In fact if you're not making use of these cognitive enhancers or aren't sure of what they are, then you really need to read this book.
Annie Murphy Paul has done an outstanding job in showing us how and why we need to extend our minds.

Jennifer Flower: I am excited about this book. I knew I would buy it when a friend recommended it.
But I was again disappointed to discover that this author, too, narrates her own book. I listened to the sample. It was monotonous. And the monotone was, itself, flat, sure to put me to sleep, despite the content!
I wish that authors - and I am one - would think more dispassionately about this, and find skilled readers to bring their work to audiences. It’s not that all authors are bad narrators. It’s that many authors are apparently not good judges of their abilities as narrators.
I am more a listener than a reader, especially as my eyes age, and I really really wanted to listen to this book, partly so that I could keep moving while I did!
I’m sure I will enjoy the book as a reader. But it’s much harder for me these days. I look forward to more of AMP’s work, and hope she will find others to read it aloud.
