EXOTAC nanoSTRIKER XL All-in-One Ferrocerium Firestarter Kit

Angel: Product is very well made and makes good sparks , made a fire in one strike. I would recommend this for keychain or backpacking because of lightweight and size. However I will be purchasing the XL it is a little small for my taste but works great.

BJ Backitis: This is the ferro rod I carry in my mini emergency fire starting kit as the primary ignition source, and it works wonderfully! It is very compact to carry but keeps the rod itself protected until use, and then screwing the cover onto the end provides a perfect handle to hold it when striking. The fact there is a "refill" kit to replace the rod and o-ring when needed is a definite plus. I love the EXOTAC items, and this one is a great part of their overall product line.

Brendan M Upton: This is exactly what I was looking for. Something reasonably discrete to go on the Keychain. The design is simple and elegant, making it easy to carry and easy to use. The ferrocerium stores in its tube to keep it protected, and to prevent jingling keys from causing a spark. The body threads together with nice washers to provide a bit of resistance that prevents it from unscrewing accidentally. I tossed the lanyard that came with it and used a loop of black Kevlar cord to attach it to my keys. Only other thing I will change is I'll probably put a drop of blue locktite on the ferro rod threads to keep it from loosening.

Peter Schroeter: Dieser Feuerstahl ist qualitativ absolut hochwertig verarbeitet. Besonders zu erwähnen sind die sauber geschnittenen Gewinde, die einwandfreie Abdichtung mit O-Ringen und die erstklassige Alu-Beschichtung. Er wirkt optisch so edel, daß er mich eher an eine Taschenlampe der gehobenen Preisklasse erinnert als an einen Feuerstahl.
Das kompakte Konzept ist wohl durchdacht. Striker abschrauben, Gehäuse abschrauben und als verlängertes Griffstück dort wieder einschrauben, wo sich der Striker befand - und schon hält man ein gut funktionierendes Werkzeug in der Hand.
Der geschraubte und deshalb - für 9 Euro - austauschbare Stahl rundet das Konzept ab.
Wer kann und auch bereit ist, für einen kompakten Feuerstahl 40 Euro auszugeben, der ist mit dem Exotac Nano XL bestens beraten.
Am Schluss noch ein wichtiger Hinweis:
Bei der ersten Verwendung muß die schwarze Beschichtung des Stabes erst einmal abgeschabt und eine kleine, plane Fläche für den Striker geschaffen werden. Also nicht erschrecken, wenn die ersten fünf Versuche keine oder nur mäßige Funken erzeugen, das ist bei jedem neuen Stahl der Fall.

witchcraft: Der Exotac NANO XL Feuerstarter heißt nun erst mal NANO..also Zwerg und ist in etwa so groß wie eine Filterzigarette oder ein sehr kurzer Kugelschreiber. Er ist leicht und hervorragend verarbeitet.
Das XL steht dafür, dass er größer ist als der erste NANO und vor allem einen größeren Feuerstahl hat.
Aufgrund der sehr wertigen Verarbeitung kann man dann eher verstehen warum so ein Teil nicht gerade billig ist.
Man schraubt ihn in drei Teile, erhält einen „Striker“ mit vier scharfen Kanten, den Feuerstahl mit einer kurzen Hülle, und die längere Hülle in der der Stahl drin war, und die nun auf die kurze Hülle aufgeschraubt als Griff dient. Somit liegt er gut in der Hand. Funktioniert mühelos und einwandfrei.
Für mich ist er nicht der Ersatz für den großen Bruder aus Schweden, sondern ein Teil der Notfallausrüstung, um ihn eben immer dabei zu haben, ohne mich irgendwie mit Gewicht und Volumen zu belasten. Der Nano XL ist so „niedlich“ dass er keinen Platz weg nimmt und nicht stört.
Ich habe ihn in Kombination mit dem Exotac Matchcap in der Ausrüstung dabei und bin nun gut mit Möglichkeiten zum Feuer machen versorgt.
Kaufempfehlung auch...

Objet splendide, très belle qualité, aucun jeu, la barre de ferrocénium est vissée et peu se changer! un véritable bijou, il y a même des joints toriques pour éviter l'humidité. Même la boite est du même accabit, la fermeture est magnétisée!
CONTRE :
Tout ayant un prix les beaux objets sont chers! le ferrocénium ne craint pas l'humide (donc les joints toriques...) la barre de ferro fait 5 mm x 35 mm, heureusemeent que c'est le XL! je n'ose pas imaginer le normal. Ce qui comparé à un Army de light my fire 9 mm x 55 mm ne laisse aucun doute sur l'intensité de la gerbe d'étincelles! pour le tier du prix ont en a deux fois plus.
CONCLUSION
En survie a-t-on besoin d'un bijoux ou d'efficacité! Moi je me suis fais plaisir, et si comme moi vous voulez quelque chose de beau (en plus d'un army) sautez sur l'occase. Pour le reste tout est formidable, le transport, la commande a mis 10 jours pour arriver.

MP.: WAS IST EIN FEUERSTAHL?
Die hier verkauften "Feuerstähle" bestehen aus Auermetall (Cer-Eisen, Ferrocerium). Es sind Mischmetall-Stäbe, die lange glühende und heisse Funken sprühen, wenn man mit einem harten Gegenstand (z.B. Messerklinge, Stahl-Schaber, Feile) über sie kratzt. Es ist praktisch die große Version eines Feuersteins, wie er in Feuerzeugen (z.B. Bic oder Zippo) verwendet wird.

WARUM ÜBERHAUPT EINEN FEUERSTAHL?
Ein Feuerstahl hat den Vorteil, dass er immer und überall funktioniert - und das auch noch nach einer unbegrenzten Lagerdauer. Man kann mit dem mitgelieferten Stahl-Schaber und dem Feuerstahl sehr heisse und relativ lange glühende Funken erzeugen, egal bei welcher Temperatur und bei welchem Luftdruck. Und es spielt auch keine Rolle, ob der Feuerstahl nass geworden ist, er funktioniert trotzdem. Das unterscheidet ihn von anderen Feuerstartern wie z.B. Streichhölzern (bei Durchnässung unbrauchbar) oder Feuerzeugen (gasen bei Lagerung aus, funktionieren teilweise bei Nässe oder zu dünner Luft nicht).

Und mit den Funken eines Feuerstahls kann man, den richtigen Zunder vorausgesetzt, praktisch überall ein Feuer in Gang...

JSS: I'm a licensed falconer and there is always a possibility of getting stuck out in the woods miles and miles form the nearest road and your vehicle... This fits perfectly on my dog tags chain (I'm active dut) and i wear this 24/7 and really don't even notice i have it on. Everythig is sealed and the rod creates awesome sparks - bright enought to use as a emergency spotter if needed. I do have to say that I carry Char cloth or char twine (twine works best)
as this material will hold an ember for a very long time... but it's bets to have a piece of the cloth or twine in teh fire bundle you SHOULD have made in advance just in case.
Also you could cary a vasoline squeeze (small tube) to use to catch a fire - but if you build your firebundle the correct way, that is all you sould need. THis little tool is AMAZING and the rods last 3000 strikes... I'm no where near that yet - but I use this for alost everything - just to challenge myeslef (from lighting the charcol, so ourside fires etc etc.
I also have somethig called a "Fire Piston from Rose Mountain Fire Pistons - featured on National Geographic Channel and this is an even more primitive way to start a fire - but I ALWAYS USE...

Wolf: Wie im Titel schon erwähnt, ein Hingucker mit praktischem Nutzen. Von der Qualität her war ich Positiv überrascht, da ich öfter mit Amerikanischen Produkten zu tun habe, welche oft nur nach außen hin edel wirken.
Es wackelt nichts, sehr gute O-Ringe, Feuerstahl austauschbar, guter Striker mit vier! Klingen und nachschärfbar, sauber geschnittene Gewinde...
Das Material, der Aufbau, die Haptik sind dem Preis auf jeden Fall angemessen (Es fängt schon bei der sehr guten Verpackung an).

Technische Daten mit guten Bildern/Videos sind auf der Hersteller HP sowie auf Youtube zur genüge verfügbar.

Auch wenn XL dabeisteht...es bleibt eine "Nanogröße" welche für sehr große Hände nur bedingt passt.
Der Nanostriker XL ist im Vergleich zum Nano nicht nur größer und daher (jedenfalls für mich) besser händelbar, sondern es lassen sich auch deutlich stärkere Funken erzeugen.
Ein Feuer zu entzünden, sollte für Leute die Wissen wie man(n) mit Feuerstahl umgeht kein Problem darstellen...jedenfalls als Ausrede kann der Nanostriker XL nicht dienen.
Ich kann das Produkt weiterempfehlen, wenn auch eine XXL Version wünschenswert wäre.

Curious: Why do I think I need a protective case for a ferro rod?

When looking at ferro rods I came across forum posts detailing peoples' experiences with bare rods that start corroding and eventually turn to dust. When you use a ferro rod, the shavings you scrape off undergo an extreme exothermic oxidization process - so intense that they burn at 3000 degrees Celsius. This same reaction occurs very slowly when any ferro rod is exposed to air, and the long-term result is a useless, brittle fire starter. This is the reason that all rods are sold coated with a black oxidation inhibitor that must be scraped off before using them.

By having the rod stored in an airtight container, the oxidation process is prevented.

Ferro rods are already brittle to begin with, so the case will also ensure that it doesn't break while being kept in my pocket or backpack.

When unpacked and assembled, the case doubles as an extremely comfortable non-slip handle. The ferro rod is long enough to get really nice sparks. I made the mistake of testing it in my bedroom, from a standing height, and the sparks burned all the way to the carpet! The striker is also very comfortable to hold and I...
