L. C. Fahrendorff: This is a truly excellent novel about WWII. I have been reading so many lately that they have begun to run together. This one maintained a needed originality for me that kept my interest throughout. The Italian backdrop brought back memories from past friendships. Thank you, I'll be looking for another of your books.

Jean Coughlan: Another excellent book by Eoin Dempsey. He weaves factual historical information into his novel and gives his characters such wonderful stories.

Booklover: The horror of the Nazi killing of innocent women and children is brought to life. The effect it had on entire villages in Italy. How the ruthless Nazis responsible for ordering these killings survived after the war and continued on with their lives without remorse because "they were just following orders".

Joan Jeffers: This story grabbed me right away. I knew nothing of this massacre. It is a heartbreaking story but one of strength, perseverance and faith! Beautiful character development. I highly recommend this book.

Rosemary: Totally stunning!  I have read many historical novels set during WW2, but this is the best of them all.
It not only tells a story of a real event about which I knew nothing, but it also has a very interesting section based in more recent history dealing with the hunt for a Nazi war criminal.
The book is very thought-provoking and deals with issues of justice and forgiveness without minimising the pain and brutality of the Nazi regime.
It contains discussion between characters and throughout the story about the perceived reasons why educated, cultured people became Nazis and perpetrated crimes against humanity.  I found this very interesting as the main argument was something of which I had been unaware.  Reasons for how this could be avoided in future were also alluded to.
The main character is Lilian, an Italian, who experienced multiple bereavements at the hand of Nazis just before the end of the war.  She was helped by an American POW who becomes the other main character in the novel.
The book is set in North Italy and then moves to New York and South America.
The description of the massacres perpetrated...

Kindle Customer: Picture the houses in your village, town or city, and in particular the house in ehich you lived. Now picture waking up in your bed one morning, then breakfasting with your family around the kitchen table. Now imagine sleeping rough that night, not only an orphan, that’s the only one left in your village.

This book is a story about love, loss, survival, compassion, the overwhelming craving for revenge and the seemingly impossible task of forgiveness.

Athena McQ: In September 1944 we meet Liliana as she is preparing to go with her 15 & 16- year-old sisters to a village dance. She’s home from university, a fact much resented by her mother, who believes she should marry and settle down to the same hardscrabble farming life their family has lived for more than 200 years on Monte Sole.
At this time, the Allies had liberated most of Italy, and the Germans are determined to save the remainder for the Reich. Monte Sole is smack in the middle, and amongst the villagers living on the mountain are partisans, rebels, Fascists, and Fascist deserters. To harbor even one of them courts retaliation.
Coming home from the dance, they find James, an escaped American POW, and bring their father who hides him overnight, and takes him to the partisans. There were rumors of an entire village, women, children, men, even their farm animals wiped out, but the partisan leader scoffs at the idea that anyone would kill women and children in retaliation for the death of two Nazi officers. He hears that a jeep carrying more officers would be coming along the road but didn’t know two armored trucks would be following not far behind. In retaliation,...
