Donovan FrancisDonovan Francis: My old Yamaha receiver only had 2 HDMI ports and the output died. It still plays but I had to move cables around to play different devices. I compared the S940H and the S930H and couldn't justify the $200 difference. I control the unit with my Harmony remote and it's fabulous, the separation of the channels are amazing especially with Netflix and even with shows that are not true surround this receiver does a great job in making it seem like it does. Take your time in learning the app because you can do everything that the remote does, don't listen to the whiners who just like to complain.

Marius Z: My 20 year old Sony receiver finally died a final death, and I quickly narrowed down my choice to Denon. This 930H is a 2017 model, was at the same price as current 2018 640H model, and comparing the 940H features to 930H, I don't feel I am missing $300 worth of value, so it was an excellent deal. Setup was very easy, unpack, plug things in, configure inputs and speakers, and go. The rest you adjust and tweak as you get used to the box.

First off, the negatives, which are minor, relatively:
- No phono input. I do have a non-amped record player, but I already have a device to play it through, so it is not a big miss. It would have been a very nice option to have this. I believe the new 940H does have it.
- No analog->digital video converter. If you have analog (RCA) video inputs, you must run an analog video out to your display. This was mildly upsetting when I found out, because I misread the spec sheet and believed I would get it. A minor inconvenience that requires me to switch video inputs on my TV for the infrequent times I use analog sources.
- Sleep mode depends on inputs, not outputs. Receiver will not go into sleep mode when I turn off...

MX5FOR2: This is a very good AVR unit. We purchased it to replace an older (7 year) Denon unit ( which still works fine). Aside from all the new features this unit is super easy to program, thanks to the TV on screen program menus. The old unit had a complex remote unit while the AVR S930H’s remote offers intuitive menus making set up so straight forward. The Audrssey feature allows very easy calibration to your specific listening environment. It also offers an‘ARC’ communications channel over HDMI cables should one not be using cable or satellite signals. Having HEOS is fine for using second room Bluetooth communications, but not a reason to purchase this AVR. If you believe that Dolby ATMOS, is a future innovation in movies this receiver works very well ! Connecting the unit by Ethernet is also a great way to go as upgrades happen effortlessly. So what is any downsides to the unit? Well it may be price. Yet watch for sales ad they do happen. .

Justin M. Carpenter: This was a replacement for a dead Onkyo TX-NR608 receiver, and what impressed me immediately was the sudden jump in clarity, especially through the subwoofer. The Onkyo had produced a very warm, saturated bass, but the Denon AVRS930H produced a tight, defined, focused bass that made loud subwoofer events much easier to follow through nuance. The most vivid example of this was the 7.1 audio track on the 2004 Special Edition of Star Wars -- yes, I have issues with the Special Edition, but it still remains one of my go-to 7.1 test discs -- in which, instead of hearing the low rumble of the Star Destroyer as a single chord, the subwoofer now articulated a slight pitch susseration of its engines, as it passed by. The Protector's action sequences also saw much cleaner speaker transitions, and an alarming clarity as the bullets whizzed past our heads, trackable with our ears. (I leaned hard, on reflex.)

Levels setup was easy. While the first-time configuration script features the same sort of decent-function-paired-with-last-decade's-aesthetics you'd expect from a receiver under a grand, rest assured that under that dated black glass decor, the process works...

JR Cash: This replaced a 10 year old Denon AVR-789 (RIP), and I'm very glad I stayed with Denon for the replacement. If you have a relatively straightforward surround setup with a 'normal' number of devices, whatever that is these days, this receiver will serve you well. Plenty of HDMI ports (7, I believe), 2 monitor HDMI out, one being the all-important ARC, lots of speaker setup options and plenty of power pushed.

Audessey setup is relatively painless, but as I've posted before, if you have back surround speakers, you must 'tell' the receiver they're present during setup to have power pushed to them. You'd think the darn thing would detect those, but that isn't the case. One nice option I'm using temporarily is that the setup will allow you to have only 1 back surround, and instructs you to plug it into the left back surround jack. That's pretty helpful if you're short of space or speakers for whatever reason.

The quick start guide in the box will get you on life support, but I'd STRONGLY recommend using the preposterously large 275 page (!!!!) detailed smartPDF manual to really squeeze all the features out of the receiver. Yes, there's an app, but I...

David L.: This receiver replaced a 17-year old Denon AVR-1801 receiver. Compared to the old one, it's great to have HDMI switching, Pandora, and AirPlay from my iPhone.

I am using this receiver in a 2 zone setup. The main zone is 5.1 used with the TV in the living room. The 2nd zone drives a whole-house speaker system in the rest of the rooms of the house. Setup was very easy, although there were two different firmware upgrades required, each of which took several minutes.

The receiver has worked perfectly with the exception of two unexplained disconnects from my wi-fi network. When this happens, the Speaker Setup menu is greyed out. In both cases, power-cycling the receiver fixed the problem. I contacted Denon support, and they are not aware of any similar issues, blamed it on a weak wi-fi signal, and suggested I use wired Ethernet. It sounds like a firmware bug to me.

The HDMI i/p scaler (as well as the extra power) were the main reasons I picked this model over the less-expensive AVR-S730h, and it works very well. When watching 1080i video from my cable box on my Vizio M65-E0 4K TV, the picture looks noticeably sharper with the receiver doing the...
