Don: Moved into a brand new home 2 states over from the one, thank God, I finally left. Gave my former 5.1 system and speakers to my kids. I bought a complete set of Sony speakers for my new 5.1 system and Sony makes an equivalent model as this Denon but with all those Sony speakers I ditched getting their Receiver and went for the Denon. I had one long ago and loved it but it was wrecked in a power surge. I looked carefully between this Denon and the Sony and read reviews. A big complaint of the Sony as when they changed volume during the movie, the Sony blasts a huge (thats what they stated) volume bar graphic on the display taking up a good part of the screen blocking out your movie and then left it there for a long time to further wreck your movie experience. I saw atrocity this in person. Denon puts nothing on the screen. Why would you need to see it or want it wrecking your movie, you increase sound with your ears, not with your eyes but this and other annoying visual "features" are lost on Sony. This Denon as well has streamed and played every HD audio format out there except possible the 7.1 but its only a 51 system anyway. I read complaints about that in the Sony review. Every...

Leslie G.: easy to install, good value

Mark: A good receiver/amp is 1 all about the sound, 2 ease of use. This is my experience after 1 week.

After the problems listed below were solved, the sound was pretty good, not great. I found the overall sound to be a bit bright for AV and music. For this reason I marked it as 4 stars, plus the setup settings glitch. All AV switching worked well and supported all UHD and Dolby formats that were sent to it. The settings with the one exception were easy to find and use. The remote has a good layout and is also easy to use. This is Denon's lower line receiver so I cut it a break. It would be better if they had put in a more active tone control to suit individual tastes. The connectors on the back of the receiver are not the best so treat them with care. I do have to turn it up quite a bit to get a good listening volume, about halfway. That's pretty far for its rated power.

The physical setup of the receiver was easy and quite intuitive. The pdf manual is pretty good. I did not use the "Setup Assistant", so I can not speak to it's ease. Connect and plug things in where it says to and zip tie where needed to keep things neat. I used all medium line high speed cables and...

Amazon Customer: Before this purchase, I had all kinds of links, connectors, and cables in my entertainment room, trying to keep my old DVD player and amplifier surround system, and making them work with the newer bluray, media player, and projector. As soon as I finally purchased a Firestick, it just seemed too ridiculous not to purchase an AV 5.1 amplifier that would have sufficient HDMI, digital, and RCA inputs and one output to my projector (instead of a spaghetti of cables and connectors linking all the video sources. to the projector). Searching Amazon, the Denon AVRS540BT popped up along with a few other amplifiers. Took me a couple of days reviewing and comparing the features of all the amps. I finally settled on this Denon not only based on the reasonable price, but I grew up with a Denon system, and it had always been reliable from my toddler years through to adulthood. Since my purchase, I have had no regrets. Setting up the 5.1 configuration was so easy with the sound calibration microphone that comes with the amp. The spaghetti of cables is gone, switching through all my video sources is now easier, and the audio reproduction is satisfying for me. No complaints from my family too....

Stuart Bourn: Same generation digital sound processor as found with Onkyo, Sony, etc that delivers powerful, dynamic sound fields that can impress when required. Easy to set up with the microphone it delivers all you need for a 5.2 speaker home theater. I have one sub but I can see that two would help remove some of the directionality when the sub is outside the main listening area. Part of my 4k system it connects easily with HDMI cables including the ability to process sound from the TV if it has other sources of a signal (int.tuner/internet). My 4 star vs. 5 star rating is the volume functionality when using a third party remote. I had trouble finding a code for my digital cable box remote and when I did, the volume works only in increments requiring multiple button pressing. I find the volume bar on the screen annoying and wish there was an option to turn it off. I replaced this unit with an Onkyo after my wife's tolerance of the volume issue ran out. I have yet to contact Denon over this issue but plan to do so.
Don't be put off - if this unit is used to play 4k BlueRay with DTS-HD Master audio using it's own remote, the result is fabulous and great value for money.
