Everything below is still true; However, after many hours playing with the TV,the App, and the unit, I learn more everyday, and the sound is still incredible. They really need to improve the instructions. And I'm not sure exactly what made it start to show up on my TV, but I enabled screen mirroring, bluetooth, on the TV and made sure both were connected to the network, now the set up screen will show up on my basic HDTV. I'm able to use set up to use Audyssey to set up my speakers. I recently added a new sub, ran Audyssey again, and it sounds even better.
I still have not been able to play my TV through the AVR-740, but I can play my AVR-740 through the TV speakers, weird.
You have to use LFE cables to hook up your subwoofers. If you don't have a labeled LFE input on your sub, try hooking the other end of the LFE cable to your white RCA input and leave the red RCA input empty, that's how it works on my old Polk sub. The other sub I purchased to use with this unit has an LFE input and with the Audyssey set up it recognized and is sending signal to both subs.

The instructions start out as an endless loop. "If you can't...

John C: I have maintained nearly all of my past input sources. (VCR, Record player, DVD etc.) Not enough RCA inputs to allow connecting most of these items. Seems to need more input source availability in all formats.

eugene king: i wish this had an input jack 1/4 but it does have rca input. the menu that displays on the tv looks (what's the right words?) super efficient, dull, easy, cost effective, whatever. it's easy to use and works but people with oohh la la pizazz for a menu might be let down. had onkyo 676, the menu looked better, the sound might be just a hint more powerful but it died 4 months later and it surely didn't sound as great as the denon. why? i have 2 speakers on bike racks in a small room as upright/ atmos but a 5.1.2 setup. and sound all around me engulfing and moving around. it's beautiful. better than the onkyo ever did, even after me trying to adjust it. the sound/ mic setup for denon is a little more strenuous (a few minutes and not much work) than the onkyo but a super great beautiful sound difference in return. i'm not sure what really expensive amps sound like and my setup is in a small room but for the price it makes my speakers sing and my world bathed in the color of sound. it would be fine in any mid sized family room too. not sure in super large as in super large environments. i believe my Wharfedale - Diamond 10.2 is the hardest speakers i have to drive and i use them for...

Cameron: Had the Denon AVR-S740H for over a month now (brought it during Thanksgiving week) and I've been really impressed with the receiver so far. It replaced the Pioneer VSX-532 due to HDMI glitches and a few other minor bugs with that unit which resulted me on getting rid of it. The build quality on the Denon is decent, it feels as if it's going to last for many years to come and the remote control is equally good too. The overall sound quality is awesome if not better than any other receiver I've used in the past, I'm currently running 7.1 surround sound and it sounds very good. The Audyssey MultiEQ calibration is executed well and leaps ahead of MCCAA calibration from Pioneer. The new upmixers Dolby Surround and DTS Neural X both give a new breath of fresh air to stereo and 5.1 sources (so far I prefer the latter upmixer).
HEOS Music is pretty good too so far. And HDMI passthrough including HDR10 is for the most problem-free.
The only con I've had with the receiver so far is the menu UI looks like old computer graphics from the early 2000s, time for Denon to step it up a little bit right there.
In conclusion the Denon AVR-S740H is for sure a great entry-level 7 channel...

John R Angell: Disappointing. Only lasted about 2 years before the chip in it quit. Couldn't get a replacement for the chip. Had to buy a new receiver but not this brand again.
