Sank: This is a really well written book, loaded with fascination facts about the ocean, and the human body and how people push it to the limits. From physiology to whales to the origin of life on earth.

Vincent Ranieri: I never freedived before. Sounds like fun I would like to try it some day. This was a great book and I really enjoyed it.

Alan D. Skipper: Seriously…if you have any interest at all in the wonders of nature and the marine environment you gotta read this book. It’s one of those books that I’ll pull from the shelf and read every few years. Thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot of fascinating things about all things deep.

Timothy Cooper: What starts out as a fairly straightforward look at the world of freediving turns into an exploration of the frontiers of marine research, and I quite happily went down to the hadal depths with the writer. A wonderful book, one of the best I've read for a long time. One sad point I extracted after reading Deep: research into marine research is appallingly underfunded. We live on a planet in which 70% of its surface continues to be a complete mystery. Go figure...

CSR: Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author clearly committed himself to the investigation of humans and the oceans, learning to free dive (a rather traumatic process that seemingly requires breaking through some serious mental barriers) and taking a homemade submersible to great depths. An interesting piece of research into what makes us who we are based on our origins...in the deep.

United Kingdom on Feb 12, 2023

Jack Coles: I was led to this book by reading an article on diaphragmatic breathing.

The author has a good go at working on a theme of depth, and going deeper, throughout the book, and makes sure the reader feels vaguely connected to the community of freedivers he spends time with.

I think the weakness is that as he had a limited budget, it wasn't possible to cover the range of things he set himself to cover. Either it was a book about free-diving, in which case it was interesting (being vocal about the dangers), or it is a book about the deep sea, of which it fails really meet the standard. It shouldn't have tried to be a book about both.

Steven Wendell: Cool read. I was pretty amazed by the changes that the human body undergoes while free-diving. I would like to try it myself one day, but never alone as the book says many times. The history of free-diving in ancient cultures is very interesting to me because of my background in anthropology and I will look into that more in the future. Another excellent part of the book was the writer's experience with the Sperm Whales. I really loved that part and the studies into their communication. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys the Sea, science and wants to learn more about the hidden limits of their own bodies.
