Bill Edwards: What David Vizard writes about in this book is the HOW, from MANY engines, he made the horsepower he made in the engine build examples in the end of this book. THIS BOOK should be required reading for anyone thinking of building an "old style" small block Chevrolet engine for whatever reason they are building it for. It WILL save you both time and money to read and reread every chapter, especially the camshaft chapter, BEFORE you build an old school small block Chevrolet.

Amazon Customer: Very informative but definitely not for a novice engine builder. This book seems alot more geared towards someone that is looking at engine building as a career. That's not to say there isnt alot of very good information for a beginner, but if you dont know what you're doing already I'm sure it could be very overwhelming.

Marco Polo: really good guide to building SBC on a tight budget. I wish it touched a little more on higher end builds but at least it points you in the right direction.

Sean S. Troutt: I liked this book quite a bit. Many of David's insights corresponded with my own experience building engines. He talks about camshaft selection in all three of the books I bought that he authored, and I found his take on this very interesting. I am anxious to apply what I have learned about cams from him. The book would have been better if David spent more time talking about some of the details rather than how the industry has failed to recognize his talent. This goes for his other books as well. He really kind of just brushed over intake manifolds. I would have hoped for more information about sizing the intake to the performance of the heads and cam selection. He clearly is passionate about heads and head porting, but then just glosses over manifolds. Don't get me wrong. This is a good book and if you are still old school like me about the Small Block Chevy, then you need to read this book to get more up to date. Nice job on the cam selection tables, valve train geometry, cranks, rods, and pistons.

D. Stamper: If your interested in small block Chevys just buy it. David Vizard is one of the best writers out there and this book has so much useful information that it is a "must have" for any SBC fan. I borrowed it, read it twice in a week and instantly knew I needed a copy of my own. I've bought two other copy's of the 1999 printing to give to buddies and they have agreed that this is a great book and sure to become a classic. Its that good! His book, "How to build horsepower" is another one that everybody needs to have. David is a Writer, Engine builder, Racer, Machinist, owns a dyno, owns race cars, and has done it all his life. Not like most books that are written by college boys that have never got there hands dirty. This guy speaks to us,,, the gear-heads. He is the modern day Smokey Yunick but instead of Drinking, Pot smoking, and chasing Whores, (not that there is anything wrong with that), David has spent much time writing what he has learned so that we all can use it. Hopefully he had had some time for the other stuff too. Order the book and don't look back. Of all the Small Block Chevy books out there these are the first two that you need. I now have the 2009 and the 1999...
