The CURT 18153 Basket Hitch Cargo Carrier is the perfect way to transport your belongings. With a 500 lbs capacity, 6-inch high walls, and a folding, angled shank for added ground clearance, this cargo basket is designed with convenience and security in mind. The mesh base makes clean up a breeze, and installation is simple and straightforward. It's the best vehicle cargo basket on the market, and its size, packaging, easy install, and customer support make it a great choice. Brad: The media could not be loaded. This product is solid. The mesh is not as solid but it is mesh and only for 500 lbs.
Very easy to setup. 8 bolts go with the plates (4 on each plate) and the 3 along the side. The instructions make it pretty simple. Just look at the picture.
The bolt pin you use to lock it up or down is over board (very strong). It the type of bolt pin I would use on my tractor Implaments.
Reasonable price for a solid product.
I been keeping it on the van cause when I need in the truck it goes down so easy.
Going get double hitch receiver so I can also have a trailer hooked up

FooYaFooYa: It did a good job on the road trip. However, 2 days in, I started hearing a weird squeaking noise where the shank meets the body. Tongue weight of my Curt class 2 receiver is 350lb. However, having this almost 12 inch shank reduces the tongue weight by almost half. I loaded it with about 200lb. 2 days in, it started sagging and making the noise. Even scraped it on a not-particularly-steep plaza exit ramp. Started to lose confidence in its ability to hold up after day 3. Literally drove an extra 6 hrs into the night to get to our destination quicker.

Sean: This cargo carrier was great for our family trip to the east coast. We have two kids and two dogs and a Ford Explorer SUV. The back seat is for kids, the cargo area is for the dogs, so where do we put the luggage and everything else we need for our trip? In our Curt hitch folding cargo carrier. Works great! The arm of the carrier is long enough that we could open the back hatch to let the dogs out at rest stops. The only suggestions I have would be to purchase a hitch stabilizer. Another reviewer had suggested it so I did. It makes a difference. The carrier bounces around alot without the stabilizer. I bought two stabilizers. The other one is for the folding hinge. It bounces around there too. You will need to buy a peg and cotter pin. The carrier does not come with one. Luckily I had one from another hitch. Otherwise happy with purchase.

JohnJohn: We were taking a 2000 mile trip on vacation with our dog-son and want to make sure our dog-son had enough room in the back of our 2015 Toyota Highlander. Did extensive research on hitch cargo carriers and finally decided this Curt model was best for us. Received the item quickly direct from Curt and amazingly the box was in perfect shape. Took the parts out and assembly by my wife and I took about 30 minutes. We followed the assembly video on an iPad and assembly went smooth. All bolt holes matched up and had no problem getting anything to fit. When assembled we slid it into the receiver on the car and put the pin in. Everything fit well. I also bought the stabilizer for the hitch so it didn't giggle and a locking pin so when staying at the motel nobody could steal the cargo carrier unless they had a portable grinding tool. I didn't know if I wanted to buy the fixed carrier or the one that swings up when not in use. I opted for the one that swings up when not in use. This turned out to be the best choice for us. At the motel we unloaded suitcases for the room and put the rest in the rear of the car. By swinging the carrier up, it was out of the way from passing cars in the lot and...

Dan Saunders: so lets start with the service. My first carrier arrived on time but the metal mesh on the bottom had a small 1-2 inch tear in it. I almost just accepted it as it would not really affect the integrity but I had time before I needed to use it so just sent a pic along to the suppler and they were super fast and efficient and I had a new and undamaged carrier within about a week.
As for the carrier itself, it was super easy to put together, it actually took me longer to get the few tools together that I needed than it took to construct it. It looks great, can take me (a 240lbs guy) on it no worries. I would have no fear at all putting on the 500 lbs. limit. I particularly like the curve in the main arm that gives you a little extra height and the ability to put it up flat against the car when not in use.
if I had to complain I would maybe suggest they include the bolt and pin to attach it to the car. I was lucky and had one handy otherwise its a fantastic product that seems built to last and looks good too.

Andrea PolkAndrea Polk: I'm a 40-something woman who is preparing to move my daughter to college 300 miles away in August. I purchased this cargo carrier to go on my 2003 Toyota 4Runner which has a 2" hitch receiver. Today I decided to put this item together and boy am I glad I did this ahead of our scheduled trip! The receiver accepted the hitch, however the hitch is just about 1/4" too long; bumping up against my vehicle's spare tire which is housed underneath the vehicle.
I have some potential solutions to this problem in mind. I could remove the spare and go without it. Or I could look for a smaller pin to go in the slightly obscured hole (making it a smaller opening). I'd be concerned about it rubbing against the though. Or I can get someone to trim off about 1/4" on the hitch so that it will fit as expected.
**I have ordered a hitch extension from CURT to see if that can't remedy the problem. The extender will reduce the max capacity to 350 pounds - including the 70 pounds for the carrier - that can be carried though. Not sure until after I try it whether I'll pursue a trimming of the end of the shank instead as it's only 1/2" that needs to be removed for a proper fit. **

Paul D. WellerPaul D. Weller: Bought this one as it had best reviews and looked like it would work fine. I didn't have any issues assembling it but more than I wanted to do. It was simple to attach to vehicle and I liked that. It's HEAVY, but I guess that is expected for the rated weight it can carry. My only negative views are- 1: Sit's awful far from vehicle. Would be nice if it was little closer to vehicle. 2: No tilt function when the rack is empty allowing to open rear hatch. You need to remove bolt to lower it to get into back of vehicle. 3: Bolt and Pin, it only came with one and you need two bolt and pins to attach to vehicle. I have one for my trailer hitch, so I didn’t have to buy one.
Future redesign would be nice if they built it more like the Thule T2 Pro XTR bike carrier. This way, you could connect it to the receiver and lock it with no problem. Having to do all that work with the bolt and pin makes it a hassle attaching it and opening rear hatch. I will defiantly recommend this to others.
