The assembly instructions are terrible. The 3 core structural pieces of the base have an up and down side. They are not marked which direction is up and which needs to be facing down. The unit will allows you to install the base wrong and you won't know it until you're just about fully assembled and then some of the final bolt holes are misaligned. This means one has to tear the damn thing down and again and start over, guessing again which direction is correct. Once satisfactorily assemble the unit is solid, sturdy and wonderful. I'm not a complete novice at this type of thing, but I needed to call in a neighbor's fresh eyes to see where my assembly error was.

Richard Hogue: Pretty sturdy, and light weight but issues with two middle pieces. Other than that was easy to put together. Could use better instructions but got it done.

It is really a snap to assemble if you completely loose assemble first then just start at Center and work out it has no problems

Tyrone S.: A couple of good features are the produce has an adapter if you are using a 2” opening, it also has a threaded hole for the pin so the unit can be tightened down so there is very little movement and or it’s a lot more solid in the hitch opening. The only issue is the assembly, the directions advise to assemble the sides or ends first; this makes assembling the center section very difficult as none of the holes line-up even with the bolts left loose, I thought I would have to drill out the holes. But assembling the center section first then the sides allowed the holes to line up properly

First cargo basket that I've ordered arrived missing item #9 in the assembly list, that actually rendered whole assembly useless. First customer service associate was a total j e r k, plainly refusing to send me a replacement part and any further help. Second agent went above and beyond her duties, even called Curt manufacturer to inquire about missing parts. In the end, I got my basket and assembled it today.
Assembly:
was like a charm. Instruction diagram does not clearly depicts whether bolts go from the bottom of the plate or the top and whether washers go under the bolt head or a nut. Well, I looked at the picture on the box and assembled the rest of the cargo basket accordingly. According to it, all washers are placed under bolt heads. Nuts are by themselves.
Overall, I am very happy and satisfied with the product. I am not subtracting any stars for the bad experience with the first customer service agent, because the second agent came thru. I have not had a chance of testing it installed on a car, but I will keep you posted....

I've been very happy with this cargo carrier. It's Stout and assembly was easy.
I DO RECOMMEND this Curt Cargo Carrier.
I roadtrip all over the country, to Mountain Bike and Camp, that's my hobby. I wanted something to haul extra cargo and even a generator when I'm really going deep. This works great and when not in use, you can, if need be disassembled it and store in the vehicle. I've driven about 2000, mostly highway miles loaded with a Honda 3500 Generator and a Chainsaw, and it performed flawlessly. I bottomed it out, driving slowly, several times in the woods and expected it to be damaged, but it wasn't. Initial assembly was pretty easy, even with the so-so instructions. There are 2 types of bolts and each bolt type only fits the hole it's meant for. The center shank, which if the main support for the whole carrier does go a certain way, just look it over and you'll see. I didn't know this and so I didn't check, which meant about 2/3 of the way through, I found out and had to pull if apart and start over, which took all of 10 minutes. I used an electric impact driver, but a regular drill or even hand tools would have worked fine. Don't cinch any...

Some of the reviews I read spoke of misaligned holes and difficult assembly. I found the holes to be perfectly aligned and assembly was much less complicated than a lot of things I have purchased. The instructions are clear. The only tricky part is making sure that the two platforms are oriented so that the tops of them are flush with the hitch shank. If they aren't, then they are likely upside-down.
The basket style carrier is perfect for the small hitch receiver on my R-Pod 179's rear. I moved the spare tire that was located there so that I could use this Curt carrier to hold a spare propane tank, a gas container for my generator, and another container where I keep my BBQ grill, home-built awning and slide-out covers, and my RV electrical cord. The size is perfect since it is narrow enough so that it does not block the taillights or license place holder. Yet, it is wide enough to be useful. The only thing that might cause problems is the base is just bars and not a solid or perforated, but nearly solid base. I ended up taking a piece of thin plywood, cutting it to fit about half (where the smaller items are) and sealing it with polyurethane. It served...

Sabine Arnold: We attached it to our Chevy Sonic, carries quite some weight (we had firewood and full coolers for camping on there) and is durable. We had ours for quite some time and see it lasting a long time
