magpie: I notice an improvement in the taste of water over unfiltered from this unit, but not having had the water tested I can only take the manufacturers word for it regarding what it removes. I've been using one of these for 3 years, and my biggest issue with it is that it's always a bit of a struggle changing filters. Anyone with arthritis would likely be unable to do it. Also, the original unit developed a small crack in the top after the filter was changed, rendering it useless. However, 3 years may be a reasonable life expectancy.

Kai S.: This filter is a lot tougher than most on-tap filters you'll find out there, but its design does make it a bit hard to clean at the bottom. Expect it to last 2-3 years before it starts to wear out and the base unit needs replacing.

Performance wise, it's easily on par with britta in removing the odour caused by chloramines in city water. I have no complaints on that. It does have a habit of backing off the threads of your faucet over time though, due to the way its rotation works.

Kelly Novak: Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter
I've been using this for a couple of months now and I'm very happy with it. I think the Culligan faucet filters are a better quality build than the Brita faucet filters I've had in the past. Also I think the Culligan water tastes a little better.

If you're trying to decide between a faucet filter and a pitcher filter, the faucet filters take more out of the water. Some faucet filters, including this one, meet NSF/ANSI standards 42 and 53. Pitcher filters generally only meet NSF/ANSI 42.

Quoting from the NSF dot ORG website:

"NSF/ANSI 42 establishes the minimum requirements for the certification of POU/POE filtration systems designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-related contaminants (chlorine, taste, odor and particulates) that may be present in public or private drinking water.
The scope of NSF/ANSI 42 includes material safety, structural integrity and aesthetic, non-health-related contaminant reduction performance claims. The most common technology addressed by this standard is carbon filtration."

"NSF/ANSI 53 establishes the minimum requirements for the certification of POU/POE filtration...

bobyboby: I've checked a lot on the differents models available on the market and this design, including the materials, is very well made. Easy to install and it comes with two adaptators which are very handy. Only bad side is that the output debit is low but I've read that this is common for three stages filtering.

Pros:
Great design
Waste are avoided by pulling the switch which deactivate when closing the faucet valve
Filter the water of Montreal to a drinkable water with a good taste...which is pretty much an exploit by itself
No black residues in the water

Cons:
The low output can be annoying for somes. It takes me about 7-8 s to fill a cup of water.

CharlysimoneCharlysimone: Hi.. I have had Britta filter systems in past. I had bought three Brittas over about 6 years. I read on consumer reports that the Culligan was rated high. OK , I'll try I thought. Good choice! It's smaller than Britta.. It was about $35.00 plus one filter inside. the filters are about $13.00 for one. I wasn't sure if the purifier came with filter so I bought an extra one. It's very easy to attach. It comes with inside or outside thread attachments to match your faucet. I suggest putting cloth around the tightening ring and use a small wrench so it will not leak or sputter. It can drip, but just tighten it and make sure you have the gasket in well. When you turn on water the first time to remove dust from charcoal and allow water to go through gilter to fill up, make sure you turn pressure on slowly while pulling out the small handle on the side. that activates the water going through filter. Let it run for 10 minutes, not the 5 minutes that several other brands recommend. When you turn off the water, the little "pull out handle "moves back to its off position by itself from lack of pressure. After initial use, let water run three seconds before drinking as well.
I immediately...

Koko the Talking Ape: Like so many others, I read the recommendation in that very well-known CONSUMER magazine that REPORTS its ratings of various products. I think that the magazine is most useful for things like this water filter, which is very difficult for a consumer such as myself to test.

So according to those ratings, this water filter is very effective and quite cheap, both in terms of purchase price and filter price per gallon of clean water. In fact it was nearly the cheapest to operate they tested. There is one other filter, a carafe-type, that performs somewhat better and is slightly cheaper to operate, but it is a carafe type: less convenient and doesn't produce unlimited clean water on demand. If you want to cook with filtered water, then you would need at least two carafes, and you might still run out if you have guests over. Also water in carafes can pick up odors from other food in the fridge, though that may not be an issue for you.

So this faucet-mount unit was the one for me. Installation was a snap, no tools required. It screwed right into my faucet without the need for any adapters. It comes with an adapter, but you may need and additional one. A trip to any hardware...
