Cuisinart ICE-70 Automatic Home Ice Cream Maker

Beth Poiles: Husband loves ice cream He was recently diagnosed with Diabetes 2, and through proper diet, has it under control! (off meds now). He was really down when first trying to learn how to eat differently. I surprised him with this ice cream maker, and some recipes for diabetic ice cream. Now, each weekend, we make 2-4 quarts for the week. We've mastered vanilla bean, chocolate and recently - the best butter pecan we've ever had!! Watch out Ben and Jerry!!

lauriegdlauriegd: This is a longer review than I usually leave because I struggled with this machine early on and significantly benefitted from tips that others left. I almost returned it several times but am happy I kept trying and I am now the "ice cream queen" with friends and grandkids. Here is what I learned.

1) Freezer must be at zero degrees to properly freeze the bowl. Mine wasn't and I didn't know it but have had it fixed.

2) Freezer bowl needs to be in freezer for at least 24 hours, preferable 48. If you hear noise when you shake the freezer bowl, it's not ready. I bought 2 extra bowls and keep 2 in my freezer at all times, with the third on reserve and I rotate them when used. That way, I can make 2 batches back to back for large crowds.

3) Freezer bowl needs to be dry when put in freezer. See above.

4) Recipes don't need to be complicated. I like the ice cream base for the butter pecan ice cream with slight modification. 1 1/4 milk, whisk with 3/4 cups sweetener, add 2 1/2 cups cream and 2 tsp vanilla, punch of salt. Put into machine for standard 25 minutes. At 20 minutes, add your extras. See below.

5) So far, butter pecan is our favorite. I make up...

Buyer: I say quart at a time. 1 quart 25 minutes. Ice pack (salt alternative) frozen solid. mix in freezer till it starts freezing to the sides of the container mixed in. First mix 3 days ago. Strawberry ice cream (made to taste) Still softer in the freezer than store brands. Will be making Ice cream sandwich chocolate chip cookies today. Much better feeling than when I opened the box to realize Automatic means Freeze your bowl and mix, waste a day, cannot take it to party setup as was the intension. Works great cleans great, just did not know that I had to look for a CONDENSER ice cream maker to do it right.
Will note 1 Quart at a time... That is more than we need at home. It Fluffs up really nice, think I could hit the top by running it a little longer. I seen lots of people complain about spill over. BEWARE

Derby Ale: Earlier this summer I used the ICE-30 at my parents' home. After making about 7 batches of ice cream, I knew I wanted a maker at my own home. Having spent time using the ICE-30, I had a better idea what features I was looking for and ended up with the ICE-70 after considering the ICE-30, ICE-60, and ICE-70. Here are the reasons that led to that decision:

Noise: Both the ICE-30 and ICE-70 are loud, but the ICE-70 is less loud. Noticeable, but not substantial. I still don't want to be in the same room while churning, but the ICE-30 was loud enough that I didn't even want to be in an adjacent room.

Speed: The ICE-70 is noticeably faster. I've read other reviews that the ICE-70 turns at about 45 or 55 rpm (adjustable on 2 settings) vs. the ICE-30 turns at about 22 RPM. The faster speed supposedly aerates the ice cream better for a better consistency. I think the ice cream I get from my ICE-70 is slightly airier, and from the ICE-30 slightly more dense, but not a difference worth discounting the ICE-30 over. I also tend to find the faster speed makes the ice cream set up quicker. It will take a few batches to become familiar with what is right, but once you see it, it's...
