A: This is good for brushing up on concepts you’ve already learned and forgotten, or for self taught artists looking for a textbook on basic illustration. I can definitely see how this was considered the Bible for illustrators back when it was written. However, it’s painfully limited to midcentury American advertisements and figurative paintings of nude women. If your illustrative goals lie outside the author’s interests, you might be disappointed. I’ve had this book for 10 years and only open it when I’m feeling stumped about compositions. There are much better resources available now.

Stephena Dunn Art: This book has a ton of information. Highly recommend for those wanting to learn more about color, light and storytelling. Definitely worth a read if you are just starting your artistic journey.

Annie: El mejor libro de ilustración que he tenido. Explica muy bien. Las gráficas son excelentes. Habla de la línea, el sombreado, la proporción, el armado de la composición y más. Lo que más me gustó son los tips que dá para hacer más interesantes tus ilustraciones.
Como alguien que practica ilustración por auto estudio, este libro ha sido la maravilla.
A MUST HAVE.
También es un excelente regalo para cualquier amante de los 1940's.

Dio Brando: I wouldn't be surprised if many of those great illustrators and character artists learned about 60% of their toolkit from this book and maybe James Gurney color and light.

Let one example stand for many:
'Light changes when we are sketching. During one sitting we may have many varying effects. How often the sun starts out bright and the sketch is under way. We try to state the effect. Then the sun goes under and stays under.
