PMF: I print in BW 90% of the time. Despite this, and when my Black ink Cartridge has plenty of ink, I cannot print when colour cartridges are low. drives me nuts.

Tie H: save yourself the headache and the hassle of smashing a product you just bought 3 months ago because nobody will cover how useless it has become. it literally will not print and it spends its entire time cycling through a cleaning process. I will never purchase another brother product ever again, buy another printer. This one is complete garbage.

bobby boybobby boy: I owned a Brother MFC-490CW all-in-one for many years, and I used (and abused) it far beyond the amount of production that anyone should ever expect from a small home office inkjet printer. The few times I had to call customer service, everyone I worked with was great and very helpful. The machine printed as many as 700 pages a month for almost 8 years. When it finally gave out, I made the mistake of replacing it with an HP all-in-one that was on sale at Costco. What a disaster that turned out to be. Complicated setup, horrible customer service and complete machine failure in less than 30 days. I returned it and purchased this Brother machine at Amazon (on sale) in it's place. It's a move I should have initially done.

This machine is a terrific upgrade in the MFC series. At a great price, it does everything an all-in-one should do perfectly. Built-in two sided printing is a bonus, and the machine is quiet and very efficient. For example, I'm really impressed with the quality of Fast Print/Draft printing considering the small amount of ink it uses. Setup was extremely easy, and right out of the box I found it ready to rightfully take the place of it's...

Jeff: This is my first Brother inkjet after a lifetime of only buying Canon inkjets. So far I've been very satisfied with the printer. I had the whole printer set up and printing in under 15 minutes. The installation process on my Mac was pretty easy, although I had to download an update first and download the iPrint app from the App Store. The printer has already updated itself with new firmware too -- I really like that it can update itself.

I am connecting via WiFi. It's pretty fast at printing. It's somewhat noisy when printing, but that's not really a problem for me because my printer is hidden in a closet. I can't speak yet to ink life, but it's easy to monitor this in the iPrint app as well as on the printer. And I like that you can set up the printer to automatically order new ink via Amazon Dash. Color quality is good but the colors aren't quite as vivid as they are on my Canon which this replaced. However the color tone was very close, and I have printed some photos which look good, so I would say the colors are indeed accurate. Coated paper would probably make these colors pop more, but I haven't tried this yet.

I have used the scanner a lot...

Geek Daddy: I've only used this printer for a week, and in a wired configuration (Ethernet). My reason for purchasing is that it's compact and Brother has a reputation for low print costs. Other models I was considering have an output tray that takes up extra room that i didn't want to waste. The print/scan quality & print speed is acceptable.

I'm used to Canon models recently, and the Brother seemed less refined. Canon has very clear instructions, and this Brother model does not. It wasn't clear at all on how to make the Ethernet or USB connections. You have to open up the printer, as if to access the print head, and thread the cable inside the thing (use the tabs on the side of the printer and pull up). Why can't they put the port outside the printer as virtually everyone else? Also, the hinges on the scanner bed's lid seemed rickety. I guess we have to be careful with it, but we will most likely use the document feeder on top. In general, the build quality is not refined. I'm fairly certain Steve Jobs had no hand in designing this.

Next, the ink tanks sit near the outside of the printer - not on the print head. I guess this might help with...
