It will allow you to move your thumb very slightly so you still maintain ability to grasp/pinch/hold things. However, the design is not conducive to any activity that also requires you flex your wrist a lot.
I needed to wear this to stabilize my thumb, but I needed to wear it during activities that also required wrist flexion. The end of the brace sits well below the base of the thumb (supporting the CMC joint), so any wrist flexion causes the brace to compress against the wrist. This end of the brace is thin but rigid, so the first couple of times this happens, no big deal.... but repeated contact against the wrist and you'll start to notice abrasions/bruising before you know it.
I was even wearing the provided sleeve to help, which definitely helped with the abrasions but it didn't do much to keep my wrist from getting sore from the continuous contact against the edge of the brace.
Only knocking off 1 star - because it definitely is a high quality brace and it immobilizes and stabilizes the thumb very well! It's pretty comfortable and supportive as long as you...

Too much consumerism: I bought this in a small for my right hand. Dealing with some bone on bone action from arthritis in my CMC joint. When this arrived, I was overjoyed at the fit. It was perfect. But, I have to point out some rather big design flaws.
1. The top of the opening for the small brace strap that goes around the wrist was broken upon arrival. I noticed it and thought it wouldn’t matter. After wearing the brace for a few days lightly. I realized it did matter. I toyed with idea of returning it. Then decided to just super glue the break. It broke again immediately after I put the brace on 2 days after glueing and clamping it. Figured after doing this, I voided any return.🤷🏻♀️
2. The plastic around the brace end on the thumb is uncomfortable. It needed to be rounded out. The edge of the plastic not only required the under sleeve to be worn, but I had to apply moleskin as well, which made it fight a little tighter than I liked..
3. Speaking of the under sleeve, it started to unravel after the first time I wore it. Now, I was just wearing it around the house or to run errands. Wasn’t using that hand to lift or anything really since I’m left handed thankfully.
I...

Charliegirl03: My MP joint has been very sore, even painful to the touch. I have arthritis in the joint that acts up occasionally, but this was different. I think I sprained it. I was using a soft style thumb brace which was helping some but I didn't keep it in consistently cuz I'm a compulsive hand washer and it was a pain to keep taking it off. I decided to try this one cuz it is smaller, a hard brace, and can be kept on while washing hands. Two days later and my thumb is soooo much better. Granted, the inside does get wet when I wash my hands but I can easily dry it and don't necessarily have to take it off to do that. Plus since it's hard I don't have to worry about getting it dirty while I'm making dinner, etc, cuz I can easily wash it and put it right back on. I don't use the optional sleeve all the time. I started with it but decided to try the brace w/o the sleeve and it's fine. I was hesitant to spend thirty five bucks on a thumb brace when my other ones have cost ten to fifteen bucks. But this was definitely worth getting. I'm so glad I got it. TIP: the Velcro section that is the sticky part to close it is very strong and will quickly stick to your clothes and snag them. So, as soon as...
