Evening Iris: I just got this book and felt my heart sink when I opened it. It's a serious effort standing at 2.5 to 3.0 inches thick, but I have several immediate dislikes:
1) Art, botanical or otherwise, is a visual representation. Most of this book attempts to talk (text) you through the process, as opposed to show (draw, paint) you through the process.
There should be a large, very colorful, high definition reference photo (50mm macro lense) plus a full (large) line drawing for the student to copy and use for practice, followed by a series of drawings leading to the substructure of the painting to come.
2) The renderings are lacking a feeling of volume and depth. If you look at the picture of Pacific Northwest Mushrooms, on page 266, this rendering reminds me of the tempera paintings of Giotto. Depth is achieved by placing one item in front of another, with some dark shadowing behind to make an item stand out.
3) The colors on the majority of the subject offerings are muted, faint as if done with colored pencil, dull (and boring.) Again, if you look at page 266, there is an overall oneness to the whole picture. It just lacks attention grabbing dynamics through color, shading...

Unsatisfied: Loads of pages with colour plates and excellent examples to follow. The only thing I question is the hours and hours they claim we need to complete the drawings...they don't take that long. Excellent value and excellent book.

Bala Chaitanya Sree: I am beginner in art which I took it up as a hobby. I purchased it to learn about different media in art and learn techniques to practice. Love the book and it is very detailed. Water color techniques are amazing. It is really fun to read and learn with all beautiful images.

critreader: I’ve seen books about drawing botanical subjects which really just look like clip art. This one is extremely detailed and comprehensive, down to the types of points your pencils should be sharpened to (it doesn’t say how, though). It’s probably overkill for me but beautifully illustrated and a source of inspiration for simplified versions. One star subtracted because like so many others have reported, the corners of the cover were damaged.

Cat Mat: My art teacher said that if you can only get one book, get this one. Botanical Art is a lovely combination of art and science. This book explains the techniques needed to create realistic plant portraits using different mediums.

herb growerherb grower: There are soooo many things to like, let me just mention one tiny thing that was omitted: there is no mention of brands except pan pastel. I think however this was a strategic decision. It is well known that Europeans prefer Fabercastell whereas USA colored pencils users lean toward wax based pencils such as prismacolor. I guess the omission of brands allows artists to concentrate more on the content of the subject matter. An experienced colored pencil artist can recognize some of the brands by the shape of the pencils.
Everything else about the book is over the top wonderful. This book is for serious artists. If you have never done this art, you can get a great foundation if you start at the beginning. If you have no materials at all, you could spend the first year doing just graphite.
As you see by the table of contents, many many techniques are explored here. For me with experience, I found there are still new areas for me to explore. The degree of detailed explanations is over the top! If your dream was to go to get a botanical art degree in an expensive college and you are stuck at home, this book will put you way ahead of the competition. The last book I reviewed, The...
