The Walrus: Apparently these are colloquially known as "Vix Bits", and they were invented and exclusively manufactured by the S.E. Vick tool company, presumably until the patent ran out.

They are now made by in USA (as of now) by Bosch or Snappy Tools, and in Asia by host of others including both established brands and Alibaba knockoffs.

These Bosch bits seem to work fine. The most common complaint people have about some bits relates to the tip bevel that allows the bit to center solidly in the screw hole of the hinge (or whatever). The Bosch bits certainly include this bevel, and they do a great job at centering the hole.

The bits don't clear wood chips terribly well, but that is a minor problem and probably a design constraint.

Keith Watson: The self centering drill bits are perfect for drilling holes for hinge screws. I’ve used cheap self centering bits in the past, but the drill bit would bind in the assembly and they were frustrating to use. I replaced them with the Bosch bits which are a pleasure to use.

Don T: I needed to mount some hinges on a cabinet I built and instead of trying to center my bit in the hinge mounting holes, I thought I would try this set. Wow!!! This set worked so great, I wounder how I got along without them in the past. I would definitely recommend this set to anyone needing to mount hinges, or any similar task.

J Osborne: These are well made and work great...springs are even ground (which is proper and which you rarely see these days). Surprisingly still made in the US. Very minimal edge/burr cleanup to do and the drill bits are good quality. They'll break in with use but if you want to disassemble and buff the parts with fine scotchbrite, put a small drop of silicone oil in there, they'll be smoother right away. Spring tension is right where it should be.

I've used these for several dozen holes and been very pleased with them. I started to do a lot of tiny #4 screws so I picked up the Snappy version for that one...it works fine but it's much stiffer and requires the special extra long drill bit replacements where these Bosch don't - they just use standard jobber length bits so they're simple to replace anywhere you can find them. I think these are better than the Snappy, maybe not quite as nice as the o.g. Vix but close.

Looking at photos of broken bits and such I wonder if maybe some guys didn't adjust the bit depth correctly before use. The very tip of the drill bit should be resting inside the end of the nose cone but set in just a tiny amount, like 1/32". That way the cutting...
