Gregg Rodgers: I'm a network engineer and thought I could buy a cheap toner for my home network, but when I tried to pinpoint all my home-runs coming from my router, it never gave me enough of a sound to tell me I had the right cable or not. So it truly was worthless, and I'm disappointed. :(

Lonnie M.: I purchased this to sound out some phone wires for a friend, only to find the same problem others have reported. That problem being that if any wires run parallel to each other at any point, the signal bleeds over and the device is useless for determining which wire goes where.

In the end, I just ended up using a 9V battery at one end and a multimeter at the other. For that, the included lead that has an RJ11 plug on one end and clips on the other was very useful, so at least the package wasn't completely worthless. I also expect this device would work well if whatever cables being traced were always far apart from each other.

S. Tattrie: Used this to help a friend figure out his cable runs and for the most part it worked great but had difficultly on a couple runs that were only using 2-wires because they had been wired for telephone. It was a little harder to pick up the signal as it was every so slight. But in the end it worked, even on runs longer than 100 feet.

Mark: Great little piece of kit, loud enough to be heard, makes an easy job of locating cables, the cable tester part is a little basic but as this was purchased for the cable tracker part it does the job fine.
Recommended to buy if you need a cable tracker.
Both units take a pp3 battery each and you can use rechargeable batteries (Amazon basic pp3 rechargeable are great)

Low Energy: The unit is light with a build quality as you would expect for this price range. This unit does however have the CAT5 pin tester for the same price as others without this. The other plus is that unlike some others that have a plethora of cables all coming out of the unit, this is modular and if you are using it for the same thing you just connect that specific cable and leave the rest in your bag.
Note as the description is a bit unclear you will need to provide 2 x 9V batteries for this.

The main issue is the speaker volume which is far too quiet and I have good hearing. It does come with ear plugs, but I chose in the end to use the receiver unit from another tester. In terms of tracing, it was as good (or bad) as others I've used, really requiring you to earth the other lead to get any useful distance even if the accuracy is less you will at least have a good idea where the cable runs even if a bit uncertain of the exact pair you are looking for.

01MGM01MGM: Good buy for $20. The toner and probe are good. They're not as powerful as my Fox+Hound but way better than my $25 Extech. I was able to tone out a 100ft cat5e line on the patch pannel pretty easily. The tone generator is very powerful and blasts cross talk into 6+ lines but it not too hard to narrow it down to the correct wire on a patch pannel. In a bundle tough, forget about it. Too much crosstalk. Another negative is the tone generator does go through 9v batteries fast. The wire testing works great. You do have to read the poorly translated manual to know how to test for line continuity, polarity and tip+ring. Also the alligator clips are a joke. I also love the on/off switch on the wand so i can tone without holding down a button. Be aware this isn't a professional tool. If you're going to be toning out lines routinely and toning out lines in bundles spend the $$$ and get a Triplett Fox+hound, or Tempo/greenlee. Those probes are way stronger more accurate, much less cross talk, have more features for tracing, and don't eat batteries. But for occasional use or something to keep in your IT dept as a backup its good.

Update: so after using the probe with different tone...
