Z. Hibbs: I am English but no one does breakfast like the Americans, especially the Deep South. I searched specifically for an awesome Deep South breakfast cook book and I found it! It has some amazing recipes and I am thrilled with this book. I love the descriptions, the stories, the pictures, and the instructions are very clear. The only thing which bothers me is that it's all in imperial measurements, but I can easily buy a conversion chart to stick on the fridge or whatever.

GadgetFanatic: There are more recipes in this book than I will ever attempt to make. I have made breakfast daily for my sons since they started kindergarten and over the years have created a nice menu of things for them. When I ordered this book I was hoping to add some robust tasty dishes for big teenaged boys to enjoy, but I was also hoping for some less-complicated and less-preparation-required ideas. Don't get me wrong, there are several dishes in here that they will enjoy, but it turns out to require more prep than I have become accustomed to. There are also a few items I won't ever try because they are too "odd" for us.
All that said, there are cooking tips that I found VERY helpful and have enjoyed pointing them out to my son that leaves for college soon. And there are recipes that I just have to make because they sound so good!

Mary C.: This is a terrific breakfast cookbook. A delightful read with lots of anecdotes and some great recipes: my kind of cookbook. Beard-award-winning Chef Currence covers all of the bases, and the vast majority of the recipes are accessible for the home cook. Some of them may be a bit too big for most of us: for example, 6 # of chicken sausage, 5# of breakfast sausage, or 7 1/2 cups of flour to make honey buns. The author does not offer suggestions for breaking down his recipes. Still, I've found plenty of recipes that I'm dying to make, including upping my biscuit game. Loved his story about his prized-but-lost beloved biscuit cutter. Loved his writing about shrimp and grits. You'll also find kid-friendly recipes, not just pancakes, but also "pop tarts." I watched Chef Currence on "Top Chef Masters" and did enjoy his sly wit. As for the profanity, I have purchased every season of Top Chef/Top Chef Masters via Amazon, and I watch them over and over while I spend hours in the kitchen cooking. I also watch other Food Network and Gordon Ramsay cooking shows. On these shows, chefs speaking on national television are bleeped over and over and over, so I'm used to it. However, if it bothers...

Gina marcell: I run a B&B lodge, and this is just what I was looking for. I was a bit tired of the same old breakfast menus week after week. John Currence generously shares his recipes that have put him on the southern cooking map (Louisiana, Mississippi). So far - wonderful! He includes many stories of each dish - fascinating. He also includes all the recipes for the condiments he uses - such as a splendid bacon-onion jam that I just made. Lots of recipe books fall short - ie. the Diners Drive-ins and Dive books, where the recipes don't necessarily transfer easily from diner to home kitchen. BBB delivers on all counts. As the cover says "The most important book of the day!" Oh -one more item, if you are easily offended by the liberal use of the f-word, don't buy this book.

LA Doc: Made the onion bacon jam and monkey bread. He calls for a gallon of chopped onions--are we cooking for the Russian Army here? And what's with the f-bombs all over the place? Me: "Hey kids, look in this book and see if any of the recipes look good, oh wait, forget it, there's a lot of f-words." Does a cookbook really need that? Does it mean the food tastes better?
Pretty much all the recipes have some version of bacon or sausage. There are a lot of interesting egg recipes.
I like southern cooking, I grew up in Florida, went to school in New Orleans and have been back to town a few times over the years. I think Paul Prudhomme and Mark Bittman have more accessible cookbooks for home chefs. This book is more along the lines of "Here's the stuff we make at the restaurant, good luck if you want to try making it at home, aren't we awesome?"
There is some great food photography here, and it's a handsome book, more of a "bad a--" decoration for a bookshelf than a practical cookbook.
I hadn't bought a cookbook in many years, and it has inspired me to cook more often, so overall it's not a total loss. Breakfast is one of those meals dads can own, with the right inspiration.

JD: I found this cookbook in Currence’s current trilogy of cookbooks and has quickly become one of my favorites. I found the cookbook first and then had a chance on a recent trip to eat at Big Bad Breakfast in Birmingham and it was everything you would imagine after reading through the book.
Expect recipes to take a while - its all scratch cooking but worth the effort. I’ve started cooking things out of it and haven’t had a bad breakfast at home yet. 5/5 recommended this book and the others in his series.
