Justin Oros: These new Baofeng's come "locked" in such a way that you cannot transmit on GMRS frequencies unless you know how to unlock them. A quick search of the internet and you will find an instructional video on how to unlock the ability to transmit. However, in order to legally transmit on certain frequencies, you need a GMRS License. (At least you do, in the USA.)

You can get a GMRS License by paying a fee (just search the internet for how to get it) which makes it legal for you to broadcast on GMRS frequencies, for 10 years. (and includes immediate family members) No test is required, for this particular license. You'll need to use your Call Sign to transmit on Repeater Frequencies.

Range is amazing for the price point of this product. You can easily reach one mile with crystal clear voice communication. Up to two miles with good line of sight, and possibly further with a longer antenna and good line of sight.

You can program these radios with Channels for FRS/GMRS using a free app, called CHIRP (Search the internet, the danplanet website). You will also need to purchase a USB Programming Cable, to do so, which can be found on Amazon. Easy enough to do, using...

MikeyMikey: I didn’t need another handheld but, these UV-5Rs certainly have a cult-like following, so I just had to have one. I wasn’t disappointed. I’m experienced with Chirp so it was easy to program.

One note with Chirp, make sure you first download the factory file from the radio and save it. Then you can edit that file and upload it back to the radio. The firmware version from the radio gets included in that file so you’ll need that to make the edited file you send back to the radio compatible.

Also, when I purchased this exact radio, it was listed as sold by Radioddity. Seems like day by day the seller of this exact listing seems to vary. Just be careful. If you’re going to buy a Baofeng on the ‘zon, you might want to make sure it’s either from Radioddity, Abbree, or BaofengTech (although the BaofengTech radios, while high quality, are overpriced compared to the others). Any other weird named seller and you don’t know what you’ll get.

Did the three-finger unlock and it’s good for GMRS and MURS. As per my pics, the power output into a dummy load on VHF was 4.77W and on GMRS channel 5 (462.6625 MHz) it was 4.18W so I think I got a good one. So, now...

Los recomiendo mucho y también les recomiendaria comprar unas baterías de mayor capacidad y eso les ayudaría si los usan por tiempo prolongado
