William Bosacker: Like most cheaply made devices, this device does not have an extremely low power storage stage. If you leave the battery in the device while it is off, it will drain till its dead in less than a year. Because of this, most of these devices also allow you to put the battery in backwards, so that it doesn't drain any current at all. While this is a PITA, it does work. Also be aware that the oils on your fingers are acidic, and will damage the surface of any metal, batteries included. To ensure that battery lasts as long as it can, make sure that you use alcohol, or some other degreaser to clean the cell if touched, and don't touch it afterwards.

I took of 1 star because of the lack of an extremely low power state. Manufacturers need to learn that this practice is no longer acceptable.

AR: Just got it and right out of the box screen is on with random parts of the numbers, buttons not responding. I popped the battery out and checked the voltage 1.1V where it supposed to be 1.5V. Replaced with a new one and works great, I did not check for precision yet, I will update if there is anything wrong with that. So in conclusion DON'T pre install batteries in devices that might turn on in a box, or just don't pre install period because electronics without physical disconnect switch will have parasitic drain. Overall good indicator probe, stupid decision about battery.

Greg: Dial indicator was dead on arrival. The battery was totally dead. The dead battery inside was an LR44 Alkaline battery. The owner's manual states specifically to use an SR44 Silver Oxide battery (more expensive, more voltage, more capacity, longer shelf life, than the cheaper alkaline battery). Do yourself a favor and order at least one of the correct batteries if you buy one of these.

I bought the correct battery from a local store because I needed to use the dial indicator right away. Payed dearly for it. The dial indicator does work quite well with the correct battery installed and did exactly what I needed it to do; Measure the lobe lift on an engine camshaft.

Shawn Francisco: First one i received was broken, looked severally used as well tons of scratches on it. Turned it on half the screen didnt work could barely make out the numbers. On/off switch, or any other button wouldnt work either. Tried replacing battery wouldnt even turn power on after that. Returning this item and another is in process to be replaced will update review after i try this second one

Got my second one and it was all scratched up and looks like it was used, but it functions. So far so good, cant complain about the price.

G. LinnG. Linn: First of all, I'm a hobbyist, not a machinist or ME. I'm not so much interested in accuracy as in "change" over a length. The picture show how I attached it to my CNC machine (temporarily) using a 3D printed design I made up. With CNC machines, and 3D printers, it is essential that the distance between the bit or print nozzle be uniform across the bed. With a newly built CNC, or after replacing the waste board, one generally runs a "surfacing" bit across the entire surface to ensure this.

I didn't have any way to check accuracy and didn't care too much anyway.

Here, I'm getting small differences in depth from one side of the carved item to the other. I checked the leveling by simply manually dragging the router/dial indication assembly across the work area. I didn't really find anything so I'll have to look for some other cause.

I intend to use this dial indicator on my 3D printers as well after designing other mounting options. 3D printer beds are often leveled by adjusting "knobs" under the bed until the corners are all the same.
