Alexx LeVasseur: I purchased this burner 9 years ago and was on Amazon today to purchase a second one so I can have two pots going at once. The one I bought 9 years ago is still a work horse. Yes, it does have it's limitations but they are not deal breaker limitations for me.

Perhaps since Covid everything is just not the quality it was years ago so I'm unclear if that might be the case with this unit as I read the bad reviews. IMHO people have too high expectations for such a lower end product. It's not the $2500 stove you just bought and will never cook like that.

I have read negative reviews stating it turns on and off constantly. Well duh! That's the nature of this type of product. It has to turn on and off constantly to maintain the temperature you chose.

Some state in their negative reviews that the outside gets too hot. Again, duh! It's an inexpensive small unit that used to be made in metal and I suppose it still is, so yes, the metal will get hot. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that will happen. When I'm finished cooking I unplug it. After I'm finished eating and am cleaning up if it's cooled off enough I put it on my shelf...

anonymous: i bought 2 of these in a row....the first didn't even boil water, the replacement heated up fine, but had the smell of burning electrical wiring. had to throw away both of them. terribly made, and unsafe.

HealthMommy: For what this is meant for, it is 5/5. That is, occasional use when travelling, staying at a hotel or camping.

You may not be please with any hot plate if you wish to use it to replace a stove, which is never as powerful of course.

We boiled eggs and heated up food and it didn't take long.

The initial second of smoke on your first run is just chemicals burning off the plate....no risk that I saw or danger.

I am happy with it. It is going to save me money on restaurants when I travel and allow me to eat my own health store bought foods. I will now be able to prep my own food at the hotel when I travel. Easy to stuff in my luggage also.

David D. Colborne: Given what I paid for it, I wasn't expecting much. I got it because I was tired of eating out every time I stay at a motel and this gave me yet another excuse to use the cheap camping pots and pans I have lying around - plus, for $16.99, if this didn't work out... meh, right?

I just finished cooking some spaghetti with Italian sausage with this and, to its credit, it got the job done. When I first fired it up, something started smoking on the burner - I attacked it with a wet washcloth and that seemed to get the worst of it off. It never set off the fire alarm. The dial offers a range of heat settings; in practical use, these can best be described as "just hot enough to boil water" (High) and "warm enough to burn your hand but not much else" (everything else). In short, this is not a substitute for a household range element.

Even so, it did what I needed it to do. It boiled water. It cooked sausage. Tomorrow, it'll cook pancakes. It didn't light on fire, set off the fire alarm, trip a breaker, or otherwise annoy management. It's not the strongest unit in the world, it's not the fastest unit in the world, but it's remarkably affordable and it still...

Michelle: I used this hot plate for five straight days in a vacation house, and plan to use it again whenever there is opportunity.

There were other favorable reviews, which helped me choose this Aroma hot plate over a traditional coil type, but I wanted to add my thoughts about it. I wasn't familiar with Aroma and would have, of course, preferred to buy something from a reputable brand. For the reasonable price I paid, though, I didn't mind pioneering while I was relaxing in Arizona.

I discovered that a setting of four was enough to bring my little pot of water to a rolling boil, but if I turned it up to six I got the boil much faster. Then I could turn the hot plate off and put my little skillet on it to warm tortillas. I put the pot back on after that, filled with cold water, and it would heat the water enough to wash a sink of dishes with it! My husband put a tinfoil pie pan on top of the hot plate, filled it with water, and cooked tamales. Multiple times! I was worried the mess which seeped through the tiny holes in the tin would not come off, but a little soapy water on a washcloth was all it took! We enjoyed several hot meals at our vacation house...
