Sometimes you have to push the bird down a few times to get him to pick up the toothpick, but overall it works pretty well!

Zachary Taylor: I bought one of these for my brother as a gift 3 years ago, and the little bird is still going strong. Easily the most fun way to dispense toothpicks.
The mechanism isn't the smoothest, and sometimes requires some coercion to get moving (too many toothpicks can cause it to jam, requiring you to wiggle him back and forth a little to finally dispense a toothpick), but overall it's a fantastic little gadget that'll brighten any desk.
Most days, I don't even need a toothpick. Yet, I can't turn down the little feathered thing. For the price, definitely worth it.

RobertRobert: Overall we were happy with the dispenser, and it works well. Our only disappointment was that it arrived with only 3 sticks, and I had to immediately send off for some of the correct size. Make sure you check for the smaller size when ordering more sticks. I think it looks good on our bar.

Sharon: Not good that it doesn’t state you need a different length cocktail stick than standard...which they sell separately.

Buster: Great little novelty but be careful if you push the head down too hard, it don’t wants to let go of the tooth pick

a long way from home: I know it is totally ridiculous to love a silly little toothpick dispenser. Call me crazy, but I absolutely do. This thing just makes me laugh. I go through a LOT of toothpicks in a day. I don't use the wooden ones but rather the "doctor's brushpicks" which I also buy here on amazon and which I am somewhat addicted to. So when Archie McPhee arrived I filled his little toothpick bin with the doctors' picks and hoped like hell that little Mr McPhee wasn't going to be fussy about the type of toothpicks he is willing to dispense. Great news.... he does a great job dispensing these. I've read some of the reviews that complained about this thing not dispensing reliably. I've had no trouble with that at all. Maybe it misses on occasion but by and large when I push his little McPhee head down he pops back up with my pick.
BOTTOM LINE: this is money well spent. I have already purchased more to give as gifts and one for my office as well. This is a no brainer. If you use toothpicks like I do this will be a pleasure to have around. So silly. So perfect.

Nanciejeanne: I usually have box of toothpicks in the cupboard above my stove. I use them to test cakes, pick things out of crevases (like cleaning appliances, waffle irons, etc.), poking into glue containers, dabbing gel food coloring, preventing saran from smashing icing, etc. HOWEVER, the boxes they come in SUCK!! I have box of 500 and have spilled them over and over and over. Then if they hit the floor, I don't want to use them for food and I think "should I throw these 50 away or do I try to keep them somewhere for cleaning and glue?" ...I guess that means I am CHEAP! ha ha!!)
Anyway, I looked at those restaurant style ones with the spinning roller, but...what fun is THAT?! I chose this because I could get ONE and not spill or touch all the other ones in the box. I was a little worried because some reviewers noted it didn't pick up. I had no problems at all with standard, cheapo toothpicks. It seems the little "beak" has to be pushed firmly enough that the pick fits in the groove. it you just tap it, it won't stick in there, you have to give it a slightly firmer push. (of course don't bang the heck out of the thing!)
I don't know that overtime the plastic beak groove will...
