Stephanie Bailey: Rather heavy going, took a long time to get going.
The story was not what I expected and quite
boring. I thought of not finishing it, but persevered!

AH: Oh I loved this. Such a sweet story. I wouldn't mind reading more of Arlene and Jimmy's life. I am all for women being strong and standing up for themselves.

Anne Pace: Well written; entertaining and an easy read. I found the reference to the women ambulance drivers in war time France interesting and well researched.

diana jaycox (my friends call me DJ): This is not my usual genre, but I was attracted by the subject , World War I American Women's Hospital. This is the story of an American woman ,whose father is a French immigrant, in Paris, Kentucky. Raised on a successful horse farm, one night in a tragic accident, she loses everything, and finds herself I'll prepared to face the future where she is suddenly responsible for her family's livelihood. Her only skill besides horses is her ability to drive and thus she finds herself part of the AWH as a woman ambulance driver.
This novel is full of fascinating history. Not just the history of WWI, the battlefields of France, but of the horrors of battlefield injuries, the conditions of battlefield medicine at the time, and most interesting the role women played in that arena. At a time when women couldn't even vote, a group of female American doctors raised their own money, joined with the Red Cross and went overseas to help with the wounded and sick. The battlefield injuries encountered in WWI , in what was mostly trench warfare, were some of the most horrific injuries ever encountered. And at a time when field medicine had not advanced much beyond the techniques used during the...

Jane: this was truly an excellent book. The book club questions at the end of the book made me think long and hard about whether I would be courageous enough to make the decisions Arlene made and do the work she did during WWI. The story of war and the issues she faced in such terrible circumstances from the beginning to the end were almost unbelievable given the era in which she lived. Women did so much during war that you only find out about if you read this genre and it definitely makes me have lots of different emotions about “our” history and I’m so glad I read this book. I read vociferously and this is one I won’t forget!

Robin Hershberger: I had not heard of the American Women’s Hospital, before. Am my profession is nursing🤷‍♀️ I’m very proud of the women ambulance drivers, nurses and doctors who went to the France during WW1 to help the civilians of the towns whose lives were destroyed by war.
Arlene showed much spunk by taking responsibility of her family’s horse farm. Going to an unknown city to find a job to support her mother and brother, then going to a foreign country in order to get wages...did she know what she was getting into? Her experiences were quite uncanny, to say the least. I do think the Captain had a mental problem while Jimmy didn’t have enough self-confidence, where Arlene was concerned. I did like Cassie. She almost didn’t make it. But thanks to Arlene’s concern and friendship, she made it until the end of the war.

Kindle Customer: an interesting book. It brought home some of fighting on the Great War, from an unusual aspect.

Enjoy would be the wrong adjective, but it held my interest.

Meldawoman: Thank you to the author Ann Howard Creel, the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my candid review. Oh, yeah, due to some weird circumstances---I also bought a copy of the book, lol!

This is an excellent read about the brave women doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and others who were NOT WANTED to serve during World War I.....but who raised their own funding to get themselves there anyway. It is a realistic description of the horrors of war, without getting too detailed in it.

I loved the women characters who were were suffragettes way before their time. And these women couldn't even vote yet!

The characters had substance and the back story was interesting. The descriptions of the hardships of war and the perseverance of the civilians was intriguing. Can you imagine your village being bombed---having to leave your home, then coming back to a destroyed home---and living there so that you could harvest the crops?

I have read a lot about WWII, but this was a welcome insight into WWI. I would love to read more from this author.

This is a great read!
