JD: I love the way Ms Bowen spins the interlocking tales. She provided an unexpected twist and turn ever so often along with nice use of foreshadowing. Well written, could not stop reading.

Amazon Customer: This is a hishtorical fiction story but would be better labeled as a romance novel. There are mentions of the war, rationing, soldier/airmen dying, women stepping up to fill the jobs the men did, but mostly about a bored woman who finds herself while working as a farm hand and expecting a baby. Fate leads her to the estate of an elderly widow whose husband, son and grandson have all been killed in the war. Then it gets really interesting. The grandson returns as a POW, she's nearly arrested for attempted murder and the gardens are beginning to flourish due to her hand and knowledge. And it ends. You are left to write your own happily-ever-after ending. A good read. It just left me wanting a better ending.

MA: Although “The Victory Garden” is another war story, the circumstances of many women because of the war are presented.
Bowen has created an easy, enjoyable read.

Mrs. J. Richmond: Rhys Bowen has a lovely fluent style. She is a natural story teller.
The plot centres around a young woman in the clutches of her well healed family in rural England and the struggles she has to lead an independent life.
It is actually quite a complex story and as with most novels depends heavily on circumstance. I enjoyed reading it, even though I found some of it a bit long-winded.
For we women who have benefitted from all the advances in women's rights since the end of WW2, especially we so-called 'Baby boomers', it is hard to believe the lengths our heroine had to go to in order to lead her own life. Mind you she did have quite a bit of help on the way.
And of course our Emily wasn't just up against a male dominated society, she was also a victim of the English class system, which is so well portrayed in this book. Not that she doesn't use it to her advantage when it suits her.
If you like a good read set in an earlier era and you are interested in the life of rural England during and after WW1, you will enjoy this book.

Jill Jaxx: Such an enthralling and entertaining story, beautifully written. I sailed through it because it flowed like a movie—I kept forgetting I was reading. Just fantastic. Thank you for writing this wonderful book, Rhys.
