Amelia Peabody's Thrilling Adventure in the Valley of the Lions - A Suspense Novel

P. Wilson: I love the Amelia Peabody series. The characters are just that, characters in every sense of the word. Amelia takes herself so seriously and it is hilarious. It probably isn’t to everyone’s taste but I get such a kick out of the whole family.

Nina: Lovable protagonists, strong characters and devoted partners and parents. Plus humour and lots of details of the early Egyptian archaeology and British government in Egypt.

Maria-Anne: The narrators did such a great job that you can just envision the 8 year old boy, a bit of a know it all who talks to much and winds his parents around his little finger, you can't help yourself but love him. Amelia his mother is a strong willed wife. Unusual for the times and a grumpy husband who really is a bit soft hearted and love his wife the way she is and wouldn't want her to be any other way. A very relaxing read.

ML: It's a pleasant read but not "mysterious" enough. I like Agatha Christie better. Most of the other books in the same series are very good though.

Amazon CustomerAmazon Customer: I loved Lion In The Valley. A 5 star read after the disappointment of The Mummy Case.

The cast of extras were memorable and so much more interesting than the last lot; particularly the character of the brave but flawed Donald; twice he saved Ramases both times in dramatic, heroic circumstances. I loved him with his fiery red hair and turquoise eyes (gotta love a red head). I would really like to read more of him later in the series.

A notable point in this one is that Ramses has lost his adorable lisp, what a difference a year makes in the Peabody/Emerson fiction universe.

Ibsnafu: Well we now have a name for our e're present Master Criminal, Sethos, king of old, the Lion in the Valley, high priest of Set, the closest thing the Egyptians had to the Christian Satan, and a red head to boot😁. As the stories always abound with at least on ginger tinted son of the British Isles, and Sethos rarely uses his natural shade, we are, as always distracted by more than one "red herring". Here we find why Emerson is so disturbed by Amelia's constant referral to"that admirable genius of crime" and Sethos' *real* reasons for interfering with their work this season. The requisite characters make themselves known, innocents wrongly accused, fallen souls for Amelia to rescue and save from the heir own folly, the omnipresent dead body "every year another body" to quote Abdullah, shady antiquities dealers, stuffy British tourists, snobbish Frenchmen, incompetent police and all set amongst the glorious backdrop of 1890's Egypt, in Her prime of rediscovery, her second glory as a treasure beyond measure and a record of history as the beginnings and cradle of civilization. Great Reader: Lion in the Valley was pretty good. The "Amelia Peabody" series follows a pretty set formula, but it offers varied settings, interesting protagonists and an archeological flavour that I find very appealing. For some reason the next book won't be available until the end of October, so I'll have to wait to read more.

Miss V E Priestley: I love the Amelia Peabody series and have read quite a few. Recently I have been listening to them through Audible and really like the narrator used. I didn't check to see if it was the same narrator on this version (audible didn't have this book), I should have done, or at least tried to find a sample of the recording. The narrator really didn't work for me so I was disappointed in this purchase. This however is my opinion and not a reflection of the seller. Other people may find that the narrator does not bother them so much.

Patto: It's the 1l895-96 season for archeologists in Egypt, and the Emerson family will be digging at Dahshoor, a promising site. Amelia and Emerson are accompanied by their eight-year-old son Ramses and his devoted Egyptian cat.

In the last book (The Mummy Case), the Emersons tangled with the invisible leader of a vast gang of antiquities thieves, who ultimately eluded them. This season Amelia is determined to catch him. She calls him the "Master Criminal," a melodramatic term that sets Emerson's teeth on edge.

Before the Emersons have left the hotel in Cairo a murder takes place, and Amelia attributes it to the Master Criminal, sometimes called Sethos, after a powerful and handsome pharaoh. The henchmen of Sethos seem legion, and those who oppose him are quickly struck down. But Amelia, armed with a parasol and a pistol, has no doubt she will triumph over this wily "master of disguise."

Archeology takes something of a backseat in this book to detecting, rescuing young lovers and getting Ramses out of scrapes.
