Gmom: This novel takes the reader away from Egypt and into the mysteries found in "civilized, genteel" London. Miss Peters entwined her love of all things Egyptian into a rough and vicious mystery in the suburban streets of London. The plot is good, but Peters does better with desert sand and mummies.

Martinez Fam: Firstly, I love a book that makes me look up a few words in the dictionary. LOL More importantly the accurate references to ancient Egypt and archeology during the Victorian era remains fascinating to me. Finally, I love a good mystery and Elizabeth Peters is/was a fabulous writer of them, keeping me riveted to the pages until the end. I am quite enamored with the characters and can't wait to move on to their next adventure. Well done again, Ms. Peters!

Catherine: Another great story from Elizabeth Peters. Amelia Peabody and her husband Emerson, are solving crimes in London this time around. Trying to find a mysterious priest who is worshipping a mummy in the British museum, Amelia, Emerson, their son Ramses, and their household staff are busy trying to stay ahead of the press and solve inexplicable deaths related to the nobility. As usual, the three Emerson's use deduction to stop a murder and capture the villain. What's not to love?!

Florien St John: Well of course I liked it, curse it!
And well I should have. I hate to think what vulgar fate may have befallen me if I hadn't.
Fun read as always - looking forward to a return to the shifting sands

Mystery loves history: This book could be considered an aberration in this series as it takes place entirely in England instead of Egypt, but it has some notable features. For one thing readers are introduced to Amelia’s nephew Percy for the first time as a secondary baddie and a foe for Ramses. Percy, as readers of the series know, appears as the villain in several of the later books 📚 after Rameses and Nefret are adults.
The mystery is excellent by the way; a prime example of Victorian mysteries ranking it up there with Sherlock Holmes. The mystery centers on the murders of employees at the British Museum and the actives of a group of dissipated young aristocrats. One of the young men is dying of syphilis and the resulting attempts to cure him without penicillin (which won’t be invented until 1928) ends in murder when an attempt is made to obtain “mummy powder” to use as a cure.
This thing is filled with plots and subplots of which there are at least three; the main one concerning the murders, why is someone(s) running around in Egyptian dress and wearing an animal mask during public viewing hours, why did Amelia's brother park Percy and his sister on her for the summer, and why is...

A M Reeves: This book is primarily set in London concerning events centred round the British Museum. I found the start to be rather slow but ended up thoroughly enjoying it and its unusual writing style. This is very much an American author writing as an English woman for a primarily American readership but enjoyable non the less - a fantasy.

ruth elaine fry: Ilove Elizabeth Peters books ,they are an over the top romp and can be a little over locquacious but they are lots of fun and appealing characters. Also based on solid historical facts and this book is no different- set in London rather than the usual Egypt this is her usual murder mystery format involving the Peabody -Emerson family ,their prodigious son Rameses features strongly in the plot and some very colourful characters come into the tale involving Egyptian artefacts and the British Museum during the Victorian era.

H: Unlike the earlier books, this is set in London, specifically at the British museum. The exploits of well loved characters made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions. Absinthe novel concluded in a satisfyingly cheery way.
What will darling Peabody get up to next?
Certainly one for the beach but be sure to have read earlier tales to appreciate Mrs E.
