Amelia Peabody's Mummy Case: An Adventure in Egypt

P. Wilson: These books are just fun to read. All the characters are just that - real characters that make you laugh or roll your eyes. Ramses gets on the nerves at first but he grows on you. The storyline is a little convoluted but I just love this series! Highly recommend for light reading.

Maria-Anne: The Amelia Peabody series is always a good way to relax. Hearing about Amelia's exploits and her attitude toward her husband and son will bring a smile to your face. Listening to the story when you are not able to sit down and read makes the shores go faster.

Amazon Customer: The plot for this book peaked my interest, but the book fell flat. I like a strong female character, but her skills as a mother where lacking. I could not get past the first 25% of the book. It was tedious and boring.

JRAlpine: How Elizabeth Peters’s aptly titled “The Mummy Case” unfolds is far less entertaining than the patter of its pompous narrator, Amelia Peabody, and her arrogant husband, Radcliffe Emerson. The two Egyptologists (and their "catastrophically precocious" son, Ramses) stumble on crimes involving murder (of course), stolen artifacts, and religious fanatics. But even if you lose track of the plot well before you finish the book, you’ll move on for more of Peabody and Emerson.

Vera straughan: I have always enjoyed the novels by Elizabeth Peters especially the Egyptian discoveries in the pharaohs tombs but this one did
not do it for me. I completed it but did not enjoy it as much as the previous ones, in fact by the finish I found it tedious.

Jennifer Airs: Rather old fashioned by good fun. Egyptology plus solving crimes and living with two eccentic males, one husband, one son. Amelia swashbuckles her way around Egypt and beyond.

Arjun: Written in a style that favours slow narration over effective buildup of suspense 'The Mummy Case' should be of particular interest to anyone interested in Ancient Egypt. Her books are characterized by a keen accuracy because of her firsthand knowledge of the subject.
Unfortunately, the story itself does not grip and even after nearly 200 pages seems to go nowhere. It's a pity because the characters are interesting and the setting is magnificent. A gripping plot would have made it a winner.

Ateana Lenn: I hesitated between three and four stars, because the Reverend annoyed me so much I could hardly bear reading about him. But it had more to do with the fact that I despise religious nutters and less with the writing. Because as usual, Mme Peters managed to wave a beautiful, graphic story about Egypt without falling in the trap of two many details/names that I can't remember without a list under my elbow.
The characters were marvelously alive and different. Ramses is truly a little s***, but I can't wait to read more about his blunders. I love that Amelia isn't a paragon of maternal fawning. Mothers are all different and all behave differently and it's such a relief not to read about one who will bend over backward about anybody. That's one of Mme Peters strongest point: the ability to make so many various characters and personalities and manage to keep them faithful to their different cultures/religion/level of education.
I gave four stars because <spoiler>of Ramses, who turns out to be a delight from the reader's viewpoint (<I>what is that little s*** doing now?!!</i>), and because of the dual criminal plot who left me with many ??? right up until the end...

Books Before Bed: I honestly didn't think it was possible to love this series any more, but I do. Amelia and Emerson together are a fantastic mix, but add to that their son Ramses on the adventure and it just keeps getting better! This type of family would be an exhausting pleasure to know.

While the mysteries themselves are only so-so, it is the characters and the setting that keep me coming back for more and thinking about this book while I am not reading it. Really and truly, this is the type of characterization that is such a treasure to find these days since it is in short supply. Ms. Peters really knows her stuff and I can easily imagine myself in the crowded streets of Cairo, in the open deserts of Dashoor or trying to find my way out of a pyramid.

There is still quite a bit of romantic tension between Amelia and Emerson, but they have settled into the married life quite nicely. This time they bring their son Ramses along and he gets into, causes, and helps solve many of his own little scraps. I don't think I could honestly handle this type of a kid with as much aplomb as Amelia does, but whatever happens it is truly hilarious. I constantly find myself chuckling at how Amelia...

Marion Marchetto, author: Intrepid Egyptologist Amelia Peabody and her irrascible husband, who has been dubbed the "Father of Curses" by the Egyptian natives, once again set forth to uncover the treasures of the ancient pharoahs. This time they take along with them their young son nicknamed Ramses and John, a servant in their employ from England.

Relegated to digging in an area deemed 'not worthy' by husband Radcliff Emerson, they are soon in the midst of a complex situation wherein a band of antiquities thieves are being lead by a Master Criminal. As Amelia tries to do her detective work she is stymied by a host of suspects and conflicting clues and information. After she and Radcliffe are thrown into the thick blackness of an ancient burial chamber in the Black Pyramid without hope of rescue, they are left to wonder if they have indeed met their fate.

This reader found the plot confusing, as though it was searching for a way to untangle itself. The redeeming grace of this book is Ramses, who speaks with the vocabulary of a university professor with a lisp that makes him all the more endearing. The characters here are stronger than the plot and have earned this book four stars.
