Kurtis John Wood: The Big Book is revered by members of AA (which I recently joined) and for good reason. There is so much in these pages that is recognisable and illuminating for anyone dealing with drinking issues and the book's accepting but no-nonsense tone gives real hope to alcoholics as well as insight and understanding for family and friends who have struggled along with them. In this aspect alone, it is a hugely worthwhile and rightly respected text.

The main complaint I can find with it is mainly a result of the dogmatic reverence for it - the most important parts of it haven't been updated since the forties. While this is for good reason in many cases, it is often disconcerting just how outdated some of the attitudes displayed throughout really are. Women are mentioned purely as wives for most of the main body of text (though female alcoholism is better represented as more stories are added in later additions) and anyone who is agnostic will find much to be uncomfortable about, particularly in chapter 4 and with the writer's assertion that those who don't fully believe in God are to be pitied.

Would it really be so difficult to make this work a little more for this century?...

Meagain: This gives the best insight into alcoholism that you will get anywhere. My son is an alcoholic and I never understood him and why he just didn't stop drinking. That is why I bought the book. Now I understand alcoholism is an illness, and you can not just tell someone with cancer to get well or just get over it. They need help and the right kind of help. Those who do not have the support of family and love ones never get the help they need to get over it. It is a terrible and heinous disease that takes those you love and destroys them. Thank God, my husband and I were led to buy the book and read it. Our son is now well on his way to be a recovered alcoholic, by the grace of God and a very good rehab center. We all learned how to talk to him and to support him. We were not the only ones who bought the book and learned how to support him. My daughter-in-law, his sister, her husband, and kids all rallied around him and gave him the courage and strength to have the will power to fight this demon. Thank God!!

An Avid Book Lover: If you are suffering from ANY kind of obsessive thoughts or self destructive behavior - including overeating, debting, or not living to your fullest potential, there is hope for you with 12 step fellowship. All 12 step programs rely on this book as the basis for recovery.

There are 12 step programs for everything from codependency to alcoholism. If you are suffering, start by getting this book. You may not understand it as you read it so you'll need support. Find a 12 step fellowship that reflects what you're struggling with. Google the 12 steps to find one or google whatever is ailing you (i.e. Overeaters Anonymous, Underearners Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous) to work the program with others.

I am writing all this because this book is the cornerstone of my getting well after 57 years of being suicidal and hopeless. It can help you too - whether you're suffering from that - or something different. It is one of the top 5 best books I've ever read.
